During a Pennsylvania rally on Saturday, former President Donald Trump was nearly assassinated after nearly being shot in the head. As the presumptive GOP presidential nominee spoke, a slew of shots began to ring out. Trump is seen grabbing the back of his head and looking at his hand before he and the crowd behind him ducks when everyone realizes it was gunfire. The former president’s secret service detail immediately swarmed him.
In the aftermath of the shocking incident, Trump took to Truth Social, posting about the life-threatening situation. Trump thanked all the law enforcement members who were there to step in and respond to the shooting. He also made a point to offer his condolences to the family of the Trump supporter who was killed behind the former president in the grandstands.
“I want to thank The United States Secret Service, and all of Law Enforcement, for their rapid response on the shooting that just took place in Butler, Pennsylvania. Most importantly, I want to extend my condolences to the family of the person at the Rally who was killed, and also to the family of another person that was badly injured. It is incredible that such an act can take place in our Country. Nothing is known at this time about the shooter, who is now dead. I was shot with a bullet that pierced the upper part of my right ear. I knew immediately that something was wrong in that I heard a whizzing sound, shots, and immediately felt the bullet ripping through the skin. Much bleeding took place, so I realized then what was happening. GOD BLESS AMERICA!” Trump wrote.
Trump received a litany of prayers from elected politicians around the country. For example, Democratic Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro took to X stating he and his wife are praying for Trump while he simultaneously denounced political violence.
“Violence targeted at any political party or political leader is absolutely unacceptable. It has no place in Pennsylvania or the United States. I have been briefed on the situation. @PAStatePolice are on the scene in Butler County and working with our federal and local partners. Lori and I are praying for President Trump, the Secret Service officers who protected him, those attending the event, and all of the first responders still on the scene,” Shapiro wrote.
Furthermore, Florida Governor and former primary challenger Ron DeSantis wrote that he and his wife are also praying for Trump. “@CaseyDeSantis and I are praying for Donald Trump and his family,” the Republican Governor wrote. He added, “It is great that President Trump is doing well. It is sad beyond measure that a rally attendee was killed and that others were wounded. The American people deserve answers about how this could have happened, as well as information about the assassin.”
Robert F. Kennedy Jr., whose family is unfortunately familiar with political violence, wrote, “Now is the time for every American who loves our country to step back from the division, renounce all violence, and unite in prayer for President Trump and his family.”
