Famous actor Dennis Quaid recently spoke alongside Pastor Greg Laurie at the 2024 Harvest Crusade, where he shared details about his “personal relationship” with our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. The event hosted at Angel Stadium in Anaheim, California, addressed a crowd of 50,000 eager to hear about the Holy Spirit.
The “Reagan” actor shared his faith and spoke about what it means to be a follower of Christ. “The most important thing is to be authentic,” Quaid began. “I’m a Christian. That’s who I am…I have a personal relationship with [Jesus].” He added, “I could feel right now in this big stadium — can’t you feel the Holy Spirit right here, right now?” he said.
However, Quaid noted that it took him a “long time” to truly come to faith in Jesus Christ while acknowledging he still has a journey ahead of him. At one point, Laurie asked Quaid about his role in “I Can Only Imagine,” a 2018 film portraying Bart Millard, the lead singer of Mercy Me.
Laurie suggested that Quaid should have been nominated for an Academy Award for his role in the movie. However, the “Reagan” actor claimed the positive reception he received was enough. “I got all the accolades I needed for that…that’s the accolades that I really love,” Quaid said. “I can see it in people’s eyes. I can feel it in their hearts.”
Earlier this year, The Christian Tribune reported on Quaid’s comments regarding a “spiritual awakening,” in which he touched on his view of the role of religion in society and the path to faith. The actor noted that as a young boy, he grew “disillusioned” with the church, but later in life, he would come around to restoring his Christian faith.
“The subject matter turned me off.” He continued, “There were probably some other things, too. I started asking questions that didn’t have answers. … I started to question my faith.” He also expressed that he had trouble digesting the Bible, particularly the Old Testament. “I read the Bible cover to cover as well, back then, and I got hung up in the Old Testament, how violent it was. God seemed like a punishing God back then to me. A lot of it just didn’t make sense,” he said.
However, after leading a life of rebellion against God, Quaid eventurevisited the Bible and discoveredering his faith. “I went back, and I read the Bible again, cover to cover, and what really struck being that this time were the red words of Jesus and who He really was,” he said.
Quaid explained how this was the beginning of his relationship with Jesus Christ. “That was the beginning of my personal relationship with Jesus Christ. And that’s really what it’s all about. From there, it’s grown, and it does fill up that hole inside me. I was there all along; my mother taught me that, but we have to learn things for ourselves. It led me right back to where I started.”
