During a recent appearance on Fox News host Greg Gutfeld’s popular show, “Gutfeld!” former President Donald Trump stated that he’s spending more time thinking about God after the failed assassination attempt at his rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, in July. After the attempt on his life that was nearly successful, Trump has been far more outspoken about his faith.
At one point in the segment, Trump referenced the assassination attempt, claiming, “So if you want to be president, I have a lot of friends that wanted to run. They’re thinking about maybe not doing it. But here’s the only good thing is that it’s always a consequential president that gets shot at.”
Describing how miraculous it was for him to have survived the shooting, Trump suggested that he believed God was watching over him during the rally. “And fortunately, so far, I’ve been very lucky, or something is greater than all of us up there, maybe watching over us,” Trump said.
Following this comment, Gutfeld asked Trump, “You bring up God, and you’ve almost been killed twice. Do you think more about your own mortality and what happens after you go on?” Trump answered, “Not about mortality, but I do think more about God, because, okay, Butler was really the greatest of all American if I’m not looking over there and I mean a full turn exactly 90 degrees, I wouldn’t be here right now.” The former president then quipped, “And your ratings would be a little bit lower perhaps.”
Recounting the moment he was nearly killed, Trump explained how his last-minute head turn to reference an immigration chart saved his life, where the bullet only grazed his ear, millimeters away from what would have almost certainly been a fatal headshot.
“But I do think about that because the chart, it was basically an immigration chart. We had our lowest numbers that we’ve ever had in immigration. And I never, I very rarely use it, maybe 15 20% it’s always on my left and it’s always at the end of a speech,” he said.
The former president continued, “So now I said, bring down the chart right at the very beginning, almost like the first sentence of the speech. Bring down that chart, because immigration such a big thing now with, you know, our country being basically taken over by Venezuela and lots of other people.”
The Republican presidential candidate described the moment the bullet passed by his head, stating, “So I said, bring down. The chart drops down. And I go, look at those numbers, and I look over to the right, I ping, and that was not I knew something was definitely wrong, and it was a mess.”

Trump has long vowed to defend the interests of Christian voters. At a press conference earlier this year he said, “I hope we’ll be defending them side by side for your next four years. These are going to be your years, because you’re going to make a comeback like just about no other group. I know what’s happening. I know where you’re coming from and where you’re going, and I’ll be with you side by side. So again, thank you once again for everything you do. And you have to get out and vote. Our religious leaders have to get their incredible people that love them so much and respect them so much. Have to get them out to vote,”
