Republican Vice Presidential candidate JD Vance recently spoke about the role of Christianity in the aftermath of the failed July assassination attempt during the Trump-Vance campaign’s return to Butler, Pennsylvania. During his remarks to the crowd of tens of thousands of supporters, Vance maintained that the the United States felt the power of scripture during Trump’s miraculous survival.
“You heard the shots; you saw the blood. We all feared the worst but you knew everything would be OK when President Trump raised his fist high in the air and shouted, ‘fight, fight,’” Vance said during his remarks, recounting the heroic moment Trump defied the assassination attempt.
Vance then spoke about faith, citing scripture. “Now, I believe, as sure I’m standing here today, that what happened was a true miracle. And on that day, America felt the truth of Scripture,” he added, drawing from Psalm 23:4, stating “Though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me.”
The Ohio senator continued, “I truly believe that God saved President Trump’s life that day. And I believe that God is with us right now and watches over this incredible nation every single day. We especially thank God for the two great Americans who were wounded and survived in July — that’s David Dutch and James Copenhaver. God bless you guys.”
Vance added, “We pray for their full and complete recoveries, and we’re honored that David and his family were able to join us today. […] God bless you and God bless your family. But our hearts are heavy with sadness, knowing that there’s one hero who’s not here with us today. And that’s, of course, the great Corey Comperatore.”
Continuing to honor the innocent Trump supporter who was killed during the fateful rally, Vance added, “We’re never going to forget his heroism that day. And I want everyone to join me right now in sending our support, our respect, our love, to the Comperatore family here with us today. We love you guys. […] Thank you for loving this country and thank you for not giving up on it.”
The Christian Tribune reported on other comments from JD Vance which demonstrated his Christian faith. Following the vice presidential debate, Vance shared a prayer that gave him the courage to take the stage with confidence against Minnesota Governor Tim Walz.
The prayer he shared read, “The prayer read, “O Ineffable Creator, who, from the treasures of Your wisdom, have established three hierarchies of angels, have arrayed them in marvelous order above the fiery heavens, and have marshaled the regions of the universe with such artful skill. You are proclaimed the true font of light and wisdom, and the primal origin raised high beyond all things.”
It continued, “Pour forth a ray of Your brightness into the darkened places of my mind; disperse from my soul the twofold darkness into which I was born: sin and ignorance. You make eloquent the tongues of infants. Refine my speech and pour forth upon my lips the goodness of Your blessing. Grant to me keenness of mind, capacity to remember, skill in learning, subtlety to interpret, and eloquence in speech. May You guide the beginning of my work, direct its progress, and bring it to completion, You who are true God and true Man, who live and reign, world without end. Amen.”
