Superbowl LIX is scheduled for February 9th, when the Kansas City Chiefs will face the Philadelphia Eagles. Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts and his opponent, Patrick Mahomes, have often spoken about their faith. Even President Trump recognized the men as uniquely devout when he congratulated Mahomes on the birth of his daughter.
In a recent interview, Hurts addressed his spiritual growth. “My faith has always been a part of me [and] I’ve always wanted to root myself in that and keep Him in the center of my life and everything that I do,” he told reporters. “Through the highs and the lows, He’s greater than all of them, and that’s something that I can always acknowledge and … lean on and remember.”
When asked what Jesus meant to him, Mahomes answered, “Jesus is my Lord and savior. He is someone that I look up to every single day to decide what I want to do with my life and how I want to live it, and so Jesus is everything to me at the end of the day.” This is not the first time Mahomes has mentioned his faith publicly. Before his last Super Bowl appearance, he thanked God for his performance.
The talented quarterback said, “My Christian faith plays a role in everything that I do. I always ask God to lead me in the right direction and let me be who I am for His name. So, it has a role in everything that I do. Obviously, we’ll be on that huge stage in the Super Bowl that He’s given me, and I want to make sure I’m glorifying Him while I do it.”
He added, “I feel like I’ve grown in my faith these last few years, and I think that’s given me more sense of who I am and why I play the game. It just kind of relieves the pressure of playing a football game because I know that I’m on that football field to glorify Him before everything. ..It’s about going out there and being the best that I can in His name.”
Mahomes and his wife recently welcomed a daughter to their family. “Congratulations to the Chiefs’ GREAT Quarterback, Patrick Mahomes, and his very beautiful and BRILLIANT wife, Brittany, on the birth of their new baby daughter, Golden Raye,” said President Trump. “This is what I call a baby with great genes, both mother and father. It’s happy times in the wonderful Mahomes family. See you all on Sunday!”
Trump has long been close to the Mahomes family. Last year, Brittnay Mahomes, the quarterback’s wife, faced online backlash for liking a pro-Trump meme. “Jesus didn’t have to agree with people to be kind to them,” she said via Instagram. She explained that the support of her husband helped her through the intense backlash. “Having him to help me get through it has helped a lot because he is very good at managing those things and blocking people out and doing all that type of stuff,” she said.

“Having him beside me and kind of guiding me, coaching me through it has helped a ton. I think that’s kind of gotten to where we are at now,” Mahomes continued.”I think the main thing he always told me is like, ‘Stop caring about what people think, especially the people that don’t even know you. And so I think social media used to get me a lot, and now it’s just like, honestly, I don’t give a f— about what people have to say about me anymore.”
