After the major retail chain Target ended its DEI programs, woke pastors have called for a boycott. In a clip posted to social media, Carlton Lynch, a self-described pastor, staged an elaborate protest. He took over $2,000 of merchandise, and after the cashier rang it up, he refused to pay. He then gave a poorly worded lecture to explain his actions.
“Have you heard of DEI?” he asked the baffled worker. “Part of the reason I’m not going to purchase this because the how [the chashier] treated me .. and so I’m going to leave,” he said in a barely intelligible screed. ” Have her help you take it all back. I’m done.” As he waddled out of the store, he provided additional context for his bizarre actions.
“So, yeah, I didn’t buy anything here at Target. See, that’s what we gotta get our activists to know, that we can do [a] boycott, but you gotta add inconvenience to it,” Lynch said. “Everybody in the country need[s] to go to a local Target, [and]shop. Get all the things that you think that you would like, [and] put it in the cart. Go to the cash register and say, “You know what? You all don’t support DEI. And they can call the police, but I ain’t coming back no way.”
Online commenters pointed out his hypocrisy. “If this man actually cared about the poor and working class (which includes non-teenage cash register employees at Target) he would never do this. That he does so is indicative of a hypocritical lack of basic decency and genuine Christian love,” one account astutely noticed in a comment.
Woke activists have organized a boycott of the retail giant. This protest, which some pastors have likened to a fast, is organized on Targetfast.org. “The Target fast will take place from March 5 through April 17. At the conclusion of the fast, we will collect data on its impact and attempt to meet with Target’s board to assess whether we will proceed to Phase 2,” the page states. ” The shareholders’ meeting is on June 12 in Minneapolis—the same city where George Floyd was killed—so we pray for resolution before then.”
“In recent days, we have witnessed a disturbing retreat from Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) initiatives by major corporations—companies that once pledged to stand for justice but have since chosen the path of compromise,” the same page explains. ” These rollbacks represent more than just corporate decisions; they reflect a deeper erosion of the moral and ethical commitments necessary to build a just society. As people of faith, we cannot be silent. We are called to resist systems that perpetuate exclusion and inequity.”
The website features a list of dramatic demands. “Honor the 2 billion dollar pledge to the black business community through products, services, and black media buys. Deposit 250 million amongst any of our 23 black banks. Completely restoring the franchise commitment to DEI. Pipeline community centers at 10 HBCUs to teach retail business at every level,” the page bluntly reads.

The website also makes inflammatory claims about Donald Trump. ” Black History Month and Juneteenth will not be recognized by the federal government. Schools are being penalized for teaching our history. Civil rights cases have been halted. Mass deportations have begun,” it reads. ” Guantanamo Bay is being prepared to become a concentration camp, and diversity, equity, and inclusion are being dismantled right before our eyes.”
