A clip recently posted to social media shows a member of the Middle Church breaking into tears. The worship leader makes a dramatic prayer and gives lip service to several progressive platitudes. This church is infamous for its ultra-woke policies and values. Online commentators were quick to pounce on this ridiculous display of theatrics.
“Please pray with me. Ever-loving and holy God, we give you thanks that we’ve been gathered in this multi-ethnic community to celebrate the lunar new year, the year of the snake, and the first day of Black History Month,” he began. The leader lamented, “The obliteration of the civil and human rights for which our ancestors fought for and died.”
“Hear our prayers for all those affected by bigotry and unjust systems, for your children targeted for deportation and the families who will be ripped apart, for trans and queer siblings subjected to hatred and violence, for those impacted by the fires and the floods,” he asked God. ” for all subject to the whims and pity biases of the powerful and erasure of their stories. Have mercy on us.”
He concluded by saying, “The Psalmist reminds us that you are a refuge and our strength [and a] very present help in the time of trouble. God, we need you now more than ever. We ask that You cover us and protect us, that You equip us and empower us … In these troubling times.” This type of political rant is common at this church. Their website is filled with woke talking points.
“Middle Church is a multicultural, multiethnic, intergenerational movement of Spirit and justice, powered by fierce, revolutionary Love, with room for all,” Middle Church’s website reads. “Following in the Way of Jesus’ radical love, and inspired by the prophets, Middle Church is called by God to do a bold new thing on the earth. We aim to heal souls and the world by dismantling racist, classist, sexist, ethnocentrist, ableist, cisheterosexist and other systems of oppression.”
“Because our God is still speaking in many languages, we work in interreligious partnerships to uproot injustice, eradicate poverty, care for the brokenhearted, nurture our planet, and build the Reign of God on earth,” the church states. ” This activism is fueled by our faith; our faith is expressed in art; our art is an active prayer connecting us with the Holy Spirit. Middle Church affirms the transformative power of moral imagination, reclaiming and reframing Christianity inside our walls, on the street, and in virtual spaces around the globe.”
According to their Facebook, this church is passionate about ‘helping’ LGBTQ+ children. “Middle Church showed up and showed OUT at the Trans Kids Rally this past Saturday—because love looks like action,” a recent post reads. ” In the face of executive orders attacking trans lives, we refuse to be silent. We stand unshakably with trans kids, NYU students, and every trans person fighting for dignity, healthcare, and safety.”

Online commenters were quick to ridicule the woke prayer. “Pray for these people who are lost,” one account said. Another added, ” Hell is proud!” Despite the online mockery, this church is deeply infected with woke ideology. Middle Church has made no statement on the controversy and seems unlikely to recant their progressive values and policies.
