P. Devon Brown, Senior Pastor of St. Mark UMC Chicago, delivered a bizarre sermon in a clip posted to social media. In his sermon, Brown talked about how Africa needs to become more like North Korea. He praised the isolated nation for its nuclear program and said it could provide a model for African nations.  He used Romans 8:37 as the basis for his odd arguments.

“In a nutshell, this scripture reminds us that there are spiritual challenges when it comes to living holy, as well as challenges simply associated with living in general, there are challenges that go along with life,” he began. ” But those who keep their faith in Jesus, those who give their lives to Jesus, will overcome, will deceit will conquer, will be able to move beyond those challenges. So when we hear the Scripture, we generally take it to mean in Christ, we have victory.”

“I believe that with all of my heart, but this morning, we’re going to take the long way around and use this text to help us think about black history in a way that I would argue, may not feel comfortable to everyone, because I want us to see that as important as Black history is,” he pivoted. ” It loses some of its shine. It loses some of its power. If we can’t tie it into what black future will be. It loses its power. We can’t relate it to what is yet to come. I don’t want to just talk about what we did.”

“I love our history, but I can’t be limited to just what we did back then,” Brown added. “I want us to talk about what we will do. I want us to talk about what we will do. I’m not satisfied with knowing that we built the pyramids. That’s powerful. That’s a great thing to me. Let’s talk about the skyscrapers that we [will] build and own.”

“You ever thought about that? Maybe some black folks own the skyscrapers, huh? Fortune, 500 companies. You ever thought about what the future should be? Let’s talk about that. I’d like us to consider a future where we are players in international commerce, where we’re players in military power,” he preached. ” I want us to dream of being able, indeed being conquerors, indeed being more than conquerors. Hold on to those two words, more than.”

“Can you imagine what it would be like if the African continent took control of their wealth and resources, and they utilized our wealth and resources, and we came together to be conquerors? I like South Africa… but [they] ain’t nothing. They can’t conquer nobody,” the pastor preached. ” Am I dreaming to think of a time and a place where black folks control things.”

While he admitted, “I know this sounds like Wakanda. A pipe dream, a fairy tale, a Marvel fairy tale. But we do come from the continent where civilization began and where mineral wealth is still abundant,” he said North Korea could provide a blueprint. ” I understand why the North Koreans do what they Do. I don’t like it that they want atomic bombs. But anybody know anything about the Korean War? Do you know how many North Koreans died during that war? Over a million.

“What’s the name …King Jong Un? He said, Oh, no, that won’t happen again. We will have us some nuclear weapons and then see what happens if you try to bomb us. We call it crazy but he’s crazy smart to me,” he concluded. In his sermon, Brown pulled from Romans 8:37, which reads “No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us.”
