Speaking during Tuesday’s State of the Union address, his fifth, President Donald Trump reiterated a powerful claim that his life was spared at the last second on July 13th in order to fulfill a larger purpose of saving America and restoring it to common sense and prosperity. An assassin’s bullet grazed the ear of then-candidate Trump in Butler, Pennsylvania after he miraculously turned his head; the bullet otherwise would have hit him directly on the forehead.
“I believe that my life was saved that day in Butler for a very good reason. I was saved by God to make America great again. I believe that,” Trump declared at the joint session of Congress. Following those remarks, Republican legislators and their guests stood and applauded for over 15 seconds in a rousing standing ovation. Democrat legislators, as they did for the entire night, sat by silently.
Watch as President Trump declares he feels that his life was spared by God for a higher purpose below:
It wasn’t the first time the President said he felt like a higher power was at work. Speaking at the Republican National Convention last July, Trump remarked that he felt like “he shouldn’t even be here” and that he was only able to speak in front of the hugely supportive crowd “by the grace of Almighty God.”
As The American Tribune noted at the time, “[h]is speech on that matter and others was highly anticipated because it marked his first formal remarks on the matter since the assassination attempt that occurred the weekend before. Trump didn’t disappoint, giving a barn burner of a speech and thanking the American people for their love and support following the horrifying incident.”
“I’m not supposed to be here tonight,” Trump said last July. “Not supposed to be here…but I’m not, and I’ll tell you, I stand before you in this arena only by the grace of Almighty God. I in watching the reports over the last few days, many people say it was a providential moment. Probably was when I rose surrounded by Secret Service. The crowd was confused, because they thought I was dead, and there was great, great sorrow. I could see that on their faces as I looked out. They didn’t know I was looking out. They thought it was over, but I could see it. I wanted to do something to let them know I was okay. I raised my right arm looked at the 1000s and 1000s of people that were breathlessly waiting and started shouting, fight, fight, fight.”
President Trump is not the only person giving credit to God for his near-death experience. The Reverend Franklin Graham, a supporter of the president, spoke at the same RNC where he recounted the horrifying instance that almost ended the now-two term president. Rev. Graham stated that God spared Trump. “Last Saturday in Butler, Pennsylvania, President Trump had a near death experience — no question. But God spared his life.”
Watch Reverend Graham at the Republican National Convention this past summer likewise claim Trump’s life was likewise spared by God:
