Representative Jim Jordan (R-OH) exploded on Democrats’ repeated efforts to trying anything to get Donald Trump, regardless of the cost to the societal or political norms that hold the country together. The moment came during a House Judiciary Committee hearing focused on ‘legislative reforms to end lawfare by state and local prosecutors.”
The context of Jordan’s diatribe came near the end of the hours-long hearing while Jordan sparred with Democrats over the notion of Executive Privilege, something Democrats screamed about particularly when the Supreme Court upheld the constitutionality of its existence. Presidents since George Washington have made claims on it, and an earlier make-up of the Supreme Court in 1974 granted Richard Nixon the same rights.
Executive Privilege almost seems mandatory for an functioning government. But as Democrats famously observed when Harry Reid discarded unwritten Senate rules in the early 2010s and had the simple majority precedent in place to block Merrick Garland’s nomination to the Supreme Court in 2016 (perhaps Mitch McConnell’s one act of significance), it would have been fascinating to watch Republicans go after Barack Obama and Joe Biden.
Jordan’s argument extended further than that Executive Privilege exists solely for the President of the United States; rather, it serves a direct benefit for the American people. “We the people,” he says repeatedly in his speech, reminding us all of the memorialized opening words to the Constitution.
“We the People. Exactly. It doesn’t exist to protect the President or his staff. It exists for us, for the American people. We the People. That’s why you want candid communications to take place between the top officials in the west wing so they can make decisions that benefit we, the people. And the left has said, we want Donald Trump so bad we’re willing to forego that and hurt the people, so we can get President Trump. And thank the good Lord, it didn’t work!”
Take a look at the incredible moment below:
Jim Jordan is no stranger to standing up for Americans and their rights. One of the biggest scandals to come out of the Biden era was the revelations that his administration, through the leadership of DHS Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas and FBI Director Christopher Wray, had been “weaponized” against Catholics.
The American Tribune covered the massive scandal when it broke in late 2023, writing that “Rep. Jordan tore into the FBI for the memo being a bigger issue than it will claim” during an appearance on Fox News’s Sean Hannity. “Well, first, they told us it was just one field office, the Richmond field office. Then we learned that oh, no, no, it was bigger than that. It was multiple field offices involved in this attack on pro-life Catholics. And now, we learn as you pointed out, Sean, that the FBI was talking to a priest and a choir director,” Jordan said.
Continuing, he added, “Now, again, remember the larger context, this is the same FBI that spied on President Trump’s campaign. This is the same FBI that censored Americans. This is the same FBI, on this particular issue, that went to Mark Houck’s home, a pro-life Catholic, arrested him in his home in front of his wife and seven children. When that case goes to court, Mark Houck wins, which is that’s how ridiculous this all is. So that’s what our report spells out.”
