In a highly controversial rant, Rev Nick Utphall, pastor of the “inclusive” Advent Lutheran Church in Madison, Wisconsin, criticized Christ in an ultra-woke rant. He slammed Jesus as well as the author of the gospel of Luke for not being feminist enough in a rant that ignited massive backlash on social media.
For context, the role of women and feminism in ministry is highly controversial. Conservatives generally hold that pastoral roles are reserved for men, while liberals seek to merge woke values with their faith. Progressive churches, such as Advent Lutheran, are more interested in progressive politics than in the details of the scripture they preach.
In any case, Utphall began his rant with blatant sacrilege. He said, ” Jesus needed to learn his lesson and stand corrected. Readings started with the Gospel reading today that was acknowledging that some of you may not like it. Maybe, since you’re a hard worker or getting compared negatively against a sibling, or simply that you hear a criticism of what, much too often, women’s work, maybe with a question of just who Jesus thought would make that meal in the bread and all of that, and do the dishes if Martha didn’t.”
Criticizing one of the most widely loved books of the bible, he said, “Well, though, if you already didn’t like Luke, hearing implicit criticism of housework, of domestic labor, of what still is way too often known as a woman’s place. Then let me go ahead and make it worse and say that this may actually be trying further to diminish women’s roles.”
Further enraging Christians, the woke pastor claimed, “It comes from the mouth of Jesus, and I really hope that it was the writer Luke, who just put it on Jesus’ lips. Martha has a strong social position, but what’s more hidden in the original language is that the tasks she’s doing are described as diakonia. It’s the word that gives us the title Deacon, which became and remains a title in the church.”
Conluding hs controversial rant, the woke lutheran argued, “See for whatever you feel about Mary pitted against Martha, if the better part of sitting voiceless is actually trying to indoctrinate women’s subservience in the church, then it got flipped around as a passage to promote Mary learning, and has been used to foster women’s theological education, if it were meant to keep women out, instead, it’s contributed to lifting them up. Take that, Luke, or Jesus, or whoever; Luke may have wanted to deny women as deacons. ”
In the comments under the original post, conservatives were incensed. One such comment read, “This is horrifying. He dares to take to the pulpit with a cross and collar around his neck and say that the Lord needed to have “His goodness” expanded. This “pastor” believes he knows better than the King of Kings and Lord of Lords. That is nothing short of blasphemy and an attempt to make himself above God.”

Building on this rebuke, another added, “This evil man probably goes home, watches Game of Thrones and throws darts at Trump supporters – while lecturing Jesus on morality. He hates anyone different from him – including Jesus.”
