President Donald Trump defended earlier comments he made on the campaign trail as well as 2025’s address to the joint session of Congress suggesting God saved him from an assassin’s bullet and put him back in the White House to save America. Going even further, the president suggested that ‘God is very proud’ of his second-term accomplishments.
The comments came as President Trump stood at the podium of the White House Briefing Room to address ongoing issues with ICE’s deportation efforts and heavy presence in Minnesota and other pressing matters such as the focus on taking control of Greenland. Amidst the policy questions, one reporter delved into the topic of Trump’s faith-based comments and God-given purpose.
“First of all, last year, you told me that you believe that the reason you won election is because God put you in this place so that you could save the world,” the reporter asked. “Looking back one year, do you feel like God is proud of the effort that you played?,” he finished before handing the response over to Trump.
Without hesitating, the 45th and 47th President of the United States immediately jumped right in, saying “I do, actually” to the prompt. He had a calm smile about him as he then articulated a powerful defense as to why he felt God would be proud of his presidential successes.
“I think God is very proud of the job I’ve done, and that includes for religion. You know, we’re protecting a lot of people that are being killed, Christians and Jewish people, and lots of people are being protected by me that wouldn’t be protected by another type of President,” he added. For reference, the reporter was addressing previous remarks President Trump has made referring to his purpose in returning to the White House. Speaking on March 4th, 2025 to a joint session of Congress, the newly-inaugurated Trump returned to the July 13th, 2024 assassination attempt in which he miraculously survived a single bullet being fired toward his head when he turned ever-so-slightly at just the right moment. The bullet grazed his ear instead.
“I believe that my life was saved that day in Butler for a very good reason. I was saved by God to make America great again. I believe that,” Trump declared in front of hundreds of politicians in the Capitol Building and millions more on television.
Furthermore, President Trump offered a similar take when speaking at the Republican National Convention just days after his life was nearly taken. He remarked that he felt like “he shouldn’t even be here” and that he was only able to speak in front of the hugely supportive crowd “by the grace of Almighty God.”
