A viral, heartwarming video swept across the internet and won over every single parent who remembers watching their child take the first steps. In this case, those first steps occurred at midcourt during a halftime show featuring racing babies scrambling on all fours to reach their awaiting moms.
Normally, this event would be sweet enough as a cohort of tiny tots crawled indiscriminately across the hardwood, reminiscent of turtle races where you just hope one gets out of the center circle and keeps moving outward. There aren’t winners and losers in the traditional sense; everyone is a winner for being a kid and a mom and a cheering spectator.
However, the moment took an even sweeter turn as one intrepid baby initiated what appear to be her first ever steps. In the video, you see a little girl crawling with her competition, only to stop and try to stand. And, once a bipedal, lurch uncomfortably forward in a stunning sense of satisfaction at having mastered one of the most incredible milestones of any child and parent’s life.
“There was a race for babies who could only crawl. lil girl came ready to crawl like the others… but suddenly she stood up for the first time and walked to the finish line,” wrote the account Restoring Your Faith In Humanity on the social media platform X.
Continuing, the account noted that there was not a single issuance of complaint from any other parent. “And the sweetest part? None of the other moms complained. They just cheered and celebrated the moment.” One would hope not – unless a handsome cash prize were at stake. Watch the lovely moment below:
Reacting to the video, commentary from this article’s author humorously noted that a cynic might suggest that foul play had transpired, in which mom and baby had rehearsed for this moment beforehand. With a little coaching, the kid was told to start out in a crawl in order to qualify for the content, and when given the single, pop up and race to first place.
As a parent, the author and commentator also joked about the reaction from the parent depending on whether or not this was the first or later-born child. If it were the first and oldest, then the accomplishment of walking would be noteworthy and almost tear-jerking. If it were the second or beyond, the parent would just be like, “it took you long enough!’ Such is the fate of subsequent children.
