Senator Tim Scott (R-SC) shared a perhaps lesser-known, albeit critical, detail of his past life when he opened up to Fox News’ Sean Hannity about a high school car crash that set him on a completely different path in life. Once a football standout ‘moving up in the ranks’ of the recruiting ladder, he had to set aside sports before graduating with a political science degree and ultimately setting the stage for a career in politics.
For context, Tim Scott has represented South Carolinians since 1995, when he first ran for a seat on Charleston’s city council. He held that seat until the late 2000s, after winning a congressional seat in 2008. He was nominated by then-governor Nikki Haley to fill a vacated U.S. Senate seat in 2012 and has held that position ever since. Scott announced in March of 2026 that he would retire and not seek a third term, though that was reversed just a few months later and as of now he plans to run again in 2028.
Of course, things may have played out very differently if not for a 1982 car crash the summer before his senior year that forced him to sideline his hopes of playing collegiate football at a high level. His own recounting had him as a star prospect even before beginning his senior season. An unfortunate driving accident that catapulted him through the windshield left him with back injuries, and while he did receive a partial football scholarship at a small Presbyterian college, sports did not factor into larger goals. He graduated with a degree in political science in 1988 and started his own insurance company before entering the world of elected office in the mid-90s.
Scott told the story of the fateful one-car crash while in Dallas for the 2026 midterm election-inspired Republican National Committee. After driving his mother to work one morning and returning home, he fell asleep at the wheel, only to be woken by the jarring and noisy experience of driving off the road and through gravel. According to the South Carolina Senator, he immediately responded by slamming on the brakes and veering the steering wheel hard, causing the vehicle to spin out of control through multiple lanes of traffic before impacting the center median wall. He was ejected through the windshield, resulting in a broken ankle, injured back, and the loss of meaningful college athletic scholarships.
“I was really good. I was moving up the ranks,” Scott recounted in the intimate interview with Hannity. “And then my senior year before it started, August 22nd, I believe it was 1982. I had a car accident. I fell asleep driving. My mom dropped my mother off at work at 6:00 a.m. Striking back from downtown about a 30-minute trip. Fell asleep,” he remembered.
Continuing, Scott then detailed his reaction and the chaos that ensued. “I hit the brakes on the gravel and jerked the steering wheel, and it took me. It rolled me into all the lanes of traffic at 7:00 a.m. in the morning, about 6:30, 6:45, and I hit the median at the median at the time, and it flipped me in the air, and I was going back the opposite direction. I went through the windshield, held on to the steering wheel. I called for help, which for me was I just yelled ‘Jesus!’, and I feel like in an unusually miraculous way, some power – angel, in my opinion – protected me through all of that carnage,” he said.
Scott was always a well-known political figure, if for nothing else than that one of the few black U.S. Senators was a staunch conservative within the Republican Party. He gained additional attention after a blockbuster 2020 RNC speech in which he introduced the concept of ‘from cotton to Congress’ as he noted that just two generations prior to himself, his grandfather had been a sharecropper in the deep south.
Relating his success through the eyes of his grandfather, who left school in just third grade to pick cotton, Scott said that the work ethic of both his maternal grandfather and his own mother, who worked 16-hour shifts to make ends meet, he was able to eventually ‘pick a seat in Congress’ instead. “My family went from cotton to Congress in his lifetime,” Scott boasted proudly of the uniquely American experience.
