As he prepares for the 2024 Super Bowl, Harrison Butker, the kicker for the Kansas City Chiefs, is speaking about his Catholic faith and how that faith informed the fashion brand he started, one meant to help people dress well while also spreading Christian values.
That came when Butker spoke to Fox News Digital about the men’s fashion brand he started alongside three other co-founders, Shepherd’s. He said that the brand came about because he enjoys dressing fashionably and also wanted to have a business he could imbue with his Christian views and values.
Speaking to Fox News Digital about the brand, Butker said that fashion is something he’s gotten more and more into in recent years. In fact, he’s even developed a reputation in the league and amongst its viewers for dressing more formally: “For the last few seasons I’ve enjoyed dressing more formally for games and I guess I’ve gotten a bit of a reputation for it.” He added, “I’ve always been drawn to dressing well, but not necessarily ‘fashion.’”
Continuing, Butker said that he starts picking out what fun, formal outfits to wear as the season gets going, having his team design suits based on the expected weather and what elements he wants to work in. “We plan out everything together and go through a lot of fabric options to select ones that fit the weather, the location and the time of year. Once we have the fabric picked, we’ll select everything else about the suit — things that don’t stand out to the casual observer but make a difference when they come together,” he said.
Then, continuing, he gave an example. Describing a fun, dark green jacket in Prince of Wales check that he wore for a recent game against the Bills, he commented on the small details that he found fun but most people wouldn’t notice without knowing to look. He said, “We picked a dark green Prince of Wales flannel, which is a very English fabric, and gave it a more British styling with strong shoulders and double-breasted peak lapels and a nod to the countryside with pockets that were originally designed for hunting jacket.”
Then, going on, he said that those small details, such as the pockets, are easter egg type details that “wouldn’t stand out to most people,” but he likes because, in the end, it “all fits together.” He then used that to tie things back to the Christian brand, saying, “It’s been a fun experience and has allowed us to showcase the great work that Shepherd’s can offer.”
Turning from fashion to faith, Shepherd’s said that he and his co-founders created it because they wanted to help men develop their style while also living out their Christian faith. Hence, he said, Shepherds’s is a “Catholic company.”
He added, speaking about that faith, “Being Catholic is central to everything I do and everything I am. I love being able to bring Catholic virtues into any business that I am involved in.” Similarly, one of his co-founders commented on faith. He said, “My Catholic faith has shaped how I approach every part of our business.” he then added that dressing well is connected to faith because dressing well “shows respect for ourselves and for others, reflecting our belief in the dignity of human life.”
