Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes, one of the biggest stars in the NFL, is also one of the league’s most vocal Christians, and the player has quickly become a role model for young Christian athletes everywhere by giving all the glory to God for his success, often speaking publicly about the crucial role that faith has played in his life and career as an athlete.
For context, Patrick Mahomes, 29, has been the Chiefs’ starting quarterback since 2018, and he has since led the Chiefs to five Super Bowls, winning the 2020, 2023, and 2024 Super Bowls with his team. In addition, Mahomes, an alumnus of Texas Tech University, has spoken proudly and openly about his faith in Christ, saying Jesus is “my Lord and Savior” in a February 3, 2025, press conference at Caesar’s Superdome.
During the press conference, Mahomes was adamant that he is a Christian, calling Jesus “someone I look up to every single day to decide what I want to do with my life and how I want to live my life.” He added, “And so, Jesus is everything to me at the end of the day.”Mahomes went on to say that the key Bible passage that directs his life is Acts 20:7-12, which he explained is “about a boy named Eutychus and his faith, listening to a sermon, and falling and dying and coming back to life.”
Continuing, Mahomes said that the passage in Acts inspired him to go all-in with his faith, saying that the scripture “spoke to me in that moment of how I need to live my life and how I need to be fully invested in God.” He went on to say that he wants to make God his number-one priority, explaining, “I try to give all glory to God. Him (sic) giving me this platform to showcase my skills and play the game that I love, and so that’s always at the top of the list.”
In a previous Chiefs Media session on February 8, 2023, Mahomes shared more about his personal faith, explaining that he believed that God “healed my body” after he experienced an ankle injury leading up to a tense faceoff with the Philadelphia Eagles. Mahomes told the press, “I wanna thank God, man,” adding, “To battle through that, He gave me the strength to be out there.”
Furthermore, the same day, Mahomes told the press that his Christian Faith “plays a role in everything that I do,” adding, “I always ask God to lead me in the right direction and let me be who I am for His name.” Mahomes went on to explain that he believed that God had given him the “huge stage” of a platform that is his pro football career, saying, “I want to make sure I’m glorifying him while I do it.”
In addition, Mahomes told reporters that he believed his faith had grown since starting his NFL career, saying, “That’s given me more sense of who I am and why I play the game.” He continued, “It just kind of relieves the pressure of playing a football game because I know that I’m on that football field to glorify Him before everything. So it’s not about winning or losing, it’s about going out there and being the best that I can in His name.”
Concluding the interview, Mahomes explained that he got a tattoo based on Acts 20:7-12, the passage about Eutycus, saying, “It’s about being half in and half out on God. That’s the interpretation I took from it, and how you can’t be half in and half out.” He added, “So that was the Bible verse that kind of stuck with me, that told me that I needed to be fully in.”
