Comedian David Spade lit up organizers in charge of a mall Christmas tree lighting event which specifically avoided any mention of the word ‘Christmas’ during the event. Spade observed how Christmas as a whole “is taking a little bit of a beating” and decried the constant attacks on the holiday season as “anti-Christian.”
For context, Spade was co-hosting his regular podcast with fellow Saturday Night Live alum Dana Carvey. As the comedic duo delved into various topics on their “Fly On The Wall” program, the issue of the Christmas-less tree came up after Spade recounted visiting some “dopey” mall which had gone woke.
“I will say that Christmas is taking a little bit of a beating lately,” the conversation on the tree lighting began. “It is December and I saw the other day there was a tree-lighting ceremony for the Christmas tree in some dopey mall but it said tree-lighting ceremony, and they were careful not to say the word Christmas during the whole ceremony,” the Grown Ups star said.
Spade never named the mall. It could have been he didn’t want to shame them, or it could have been that the name doesn’t matter. The mall could have been anywhere in the United States at this point and addresses a larger problem than a specific location erasing Christianity.
“Why?” Spade asked rhetorically of the move of making it a tree lighting ceremony as opposed to a Christmas tree lighting ceremony. After all, most regular trees don’t get lights strung up on them in December; Christmas trees do.
“So it’s just a tree?” And you go, I would understand if you said, ‘They’re doing the tree lighting at [a certain mall] or whatever. You go, ‘OK.’ But to consciously avoid that, then what is the tree for?” he continued. “A December to Remember? Is it a Lexus dealership? Why do we have — for the whole month? Isn’t it for Christmas?”
After Carvey noted how they have friends who aren’t Christians and don’t get offended whatsoever at the mention of Christmas. “I’ve never met someone from another religious faith that was upset about a Christmas tree,” he commented, to which Spade jumped in: “I’d say stop that bulls—.”
What’s more, and as painfully obvious as it is, Christmas in the West has already become largely secularized with or without dropping the title of Christmas from a tree. Carvey rejoined the conversation again, saying “at this point in America, it’s just Christmas. It’s a fun holiday.” Of course, his point only adds to the outrage in the sentiment expressed by Spade. It’s already a season with Santa and gifts and trees and less about the birth of Jesus Christ, and yet it’s still not enough for the progressive left.
The pair then related how it felt like more thought policing. Carvey said he didn’t like the idea that some words were unusable, to which Spade declared the entire charade took on an anti-Christian feeling. “I don’t like the anti-Christian feel because Christmas to me wasn’t really about that because I am Christian,” Spade said.
