Cynthia Erivo, a British actress best known for her role in’ Wicked,’ is set to play the leading role in a new version of ‘Jesus Christ Superstar.’ Erivo, who self-identifies as bi-sexual, has made several disparaging comments about Christians. Unsurprisingly the decision drew fire from both Christian audiences and pastors. Pastor John K. Amanchukwu Sr. took to social media to condemn the decision.
In an interview with Elle, the actress adressed the intersection between her catholicism and her ‘queer identity.’ “I have a deep belief that God makes people as they’re meant to be,” she said. ” The rules for themselves that people put upon others have nothing to do with me and my faith. I can’t allow narrow thinking that some Christians or Catholics have of what faith is to affect how vast I think faith can be. Faith is so big—so much bigger than set rules.”
“As time changes, we are also meant to change. If me loving someone makes you upset, then we have to refocus. I think the main rule that we’re all supposed to follow is to love one another as you would love yourself,” she added. ” That’s it. That’s the big overarching thing. Am I making space to care for other people, be kind to other people, be as good to other people as I would have other people be to me? If those are the things I’m following, then I think I’m following my faith.”
“With all due respect, and humbly submitted, Cynthia Erivo is too BALD, BROWN, and BI to play Jesus. Casting a woman as Jesus Christ is an intentional form of blasphemy that Hollywood would be fuming over if done to certain other religions,” Pastor John K. Amanchukwu Sr. said in response to her casting. Many other commentators on social media echoed his thoughts.
“And let’s further set the record straight…I’m pretty sure Jesus Christ wasn’t bald either. #IKYL Revelation 1:14 KJV [14] His head and his hairs were white like wool, as white as snow; and his eyes were as a flame of fire,” one user objected. “This is outrageous. Any, ANY other god and this doesn’t see the light of day? Jesus is the only on they attack with impunity. That’s how I know I’m following the correct one true king,” another said.
This is not the only Christian film to draw controversy. Last year Megyn Kelly slammed the Golden Globe-nominated movie “Conclave. “The film features religious leaders as they work to select the new pope while discovering dark secrets and corruption within the Roman Catholic Church. Kelly took to X to make her issues with the film known. The media superstar said “Just made the huge mistake of watching the much-celebrated “Conclave” & it is the most disgusting anti-Catholic film I have seen in a long time.”
She added “Shame on Ralph Fiennes, Stanley Tucci & John Lithgow for starring in it & shame on director Edward Berger (among others). ‘Spoiler:’ They make THE POPE INTERSEX!” She went on to complain that “There are almost no redeeming characters in the movie – every cardinal is morally bankrupt/repulsive.” The film is up for awards in original Score, Screenplay of a Motion Picture, and Drama Motion Picture categories.

She explained that The only exception of course is the intersex pope (who – surprise! – has female reproductive parts) & the cardinal who keeps her secret – bc of course that kind of Catholic secret-keeping must be lionized.” Kelly stated “I’m disgusted. What a thing to release to streaming just in time for Christmas. They would never do this to Muslims, but Christians/Catholics are always fair game to mock/belittle/smear.”
