In a video posted on his Instagram just days after he underwent heart surgery to treat his atrial fibrillation condition, Christian artist Jeremy Camp explained how the surgery reminded him that his life is in “God’s hands.” Further, he explained that the surgery helped him deepen his faith in God. His wife, Adie, was with him in the Instagram video.
Speaking about how the diagnosis and surgery that soon followed helped him learn about his faith and build in it, Camp explained that his AFib diagnosis reminded him that our fate isn’t really in our hands, as even if we try to stay healthy, defects we’re born with could pop up and undo all of that. Rather, our fate is in God’s hands, and we should put our trust in Him.
Camp, explaining how the diagnosis reminded him of that in the video, said, “I’ve been learning a lot. I’ve always battled with trust … with doing things in my own strength. Being the guy who’s super healthy and fit and I think, ‘I can get this, I’m gonna stay healthy forever.’ And this just came on, it’s just a defect.”
Continuing, he explained how it reminded him that his life and fate are in God’s hands, said, “It’s nothing that I did or nothing that I caused. It’s just something that happened. Realizing that my life is in God’s hands, literally, like coming to grips with that. I can’t control it. I can do the best I can with my health, the best you can with protecting your family, protecting things or whatever.”
Camp then reminded viewers that God is in control, and that being reminded of that drew him closer to God. He said, “But ultimately, God is in control and He loves us more than we even know. And so, for me, I feel like He’s stripping apart every little ounce of control that I think I have in literally making me rely so much more on Him in a beautiful way. And it’s been so, so rich, and it’s drawing me a lot closer to Jesus.”
Camp also commented on how his situation was debilitating, saying, “It was just bad. I had to walk off stage early and they had a medical team for me.” He added that it helped having a “family of Christ” praying for him, saying, “We debated on even saying anything, but honestly why would I not … [we thought], ‘You know what? As a family that’s what we do.’ You know you are our family, the family of Christ coming together. So I asked you guys to pray.”
Similarly, his wife, Adie Camp, thanked that community in Christ for how “beautiful” it was in coming together to pray for Mr. Camp, saying, “I can’t even begin to tell you how beautiful the Body of Christ is coming together and being together in this. We really felt so carried and so cared for by you guys.”
