In yet another huge cultural win for Christians and religious liberty in America, a college student who was targeted by a transgender professor for citing the Bible in a writing assignment had her scores reversed and the activist responsible for the failing grade was fired.
For context, a University of Oklahoma student named Samantha Fulnecky defended traditional gender roles by citing biblical text and arguing from a faith-based position when writing her essay. The teaching assistant, a transgender individual, took personal offense at both the notion of traditional gender roles and use of the Bible as an authoritative text and subsequently scored Fulnecky 0/25 on the paper.
Fulnecky claims she had never received anything except perfect marks on her assignments, using that history as evidence of discrimination on account of her religious viewpoints. Moreover, rather than evaluate the paper based on the use of logic and claims, as the paper was clearly about defending a certain point of view backed with support, the professor took issue with the entire premise and failed her solely for the viewpoint and not the merit of the defense of the viewpoint.
As The American Tribune reported, the university didn’t want to come to her support, but eventually the backlash was too strong to ignore. After immense fury and online responses, the university “responded by correcting Samantha’s grade to give her a reasonable score on the assignment, and fired the teacher’s assistant who was responsible for the ridiculous grade on her paper, announcing that the TA no longer has instructional duties at the school.”
Fulnecky has since become something of a conservative darling in her fifteen minutes of fame. She has done speaking engagements to highlight the absurdly woke response from the transgender teaching assistant and has been applauded for pushing back in defense of her Christian worldview.
In the video below, the OU student explains what happened. “My name is Samantha Fulnecky. I am a junior premed student at OU. The title of the course is lifespan development. We’ve never been asked to write about anything like this before, nothing that’s controversial. We’re usually just asked to read an article and give our reaction to the article. And I’ve gotten 100 on every reaction paper that I’ve been asked to do in this class,” she begins.
She went on, saying her paper was attacked for the position it took rather than assayed based on its construction. “He was trying to say that gender is not fixed and that it’s not binary. That was the article that we had to read and react to, and the stance I took was in disagreement with that. And I said that God made us male and female, and that he made us equally, but with different gifts and abilities. I received a zero on it.”
“The feedback I got was pretty shocking, because I was told that my writing was offensive. No one’s encouraged to have diverse opinions anymore. Everyone’s encouraged to, you know, not step on people’s toes. Don’t offend anyone. I would rather, you know, have my integrity and get a bad grade than lie about what I believe,” she continued.
As the video ends, the narration from the entity responsible for compiling the interview stated that Fulnecky’s experience was one of countless experienced by progressive overload in the college setting. “In another troubling incident at OU shows what’s wrong with higher ed today, a student was punished for expressing a faith based belief. It’s time for the OU regents to step in and put a stop to this. Enough is enough. Tell the OU regents today, visit OCPA, think.org/take action.”
