Professional female cyclists were called out after a gruesome video showed a high-volume crash in which one of the racers sailed over a guard rail to avoid the massive collision, only to plummet what appears to be ten to fifteen feet and rendered immobile and possibly unconscious.
For context, rider Debora Silvestri shows up a few seconds into a viral clip shared across social media. Ahead of her, a growing pile of riders are steering into each other as some apply brakes or swerve. Cycling at high velocity at a turn, it appears the crash was partly caused by limited reaction time. Silvestri’s attempt to avoid landing in the pile resulted in her ejection over a guardrail overlooking a steep drop and road below.
Able to avoid the pile but not the combination of speed and gravity, the female cyclist’s body was hurled over and she was sent careening into the road below. Immediately upon impact, her limp body lay prostrate and for the remainder of the clip she is seen lifeless and unmoving. The ensuing reaction from her competitors drew swift outrage and condemnation for appearing to be self-absorbed in their own problems and being entirely unattentive to the injured racer. Watch the moment below:
“Cycling is a snobby sport. See the way nobody else ran to help the girl who went over the edge. Everyones [sic] focused on getting back on their own bike. They are probably more pissed that their Strava times are gonna be down..its all about the self accomplishments for them lot,” one user posted on X under the video.
“That poor woman who flew off the edge… I still can’t believe no one rushed to check on her right away. How did they not see her? I guess it happened so fast,” said another.
“Why don’t they just… stop instead of running into each other? I’ve never understood how bicycle accidents happen with each other or cars. It’s like bicyclists are immune to braking. REALLY hope that one that went over the edge straight onto their back is okay,” added a third.
Despite the horrific-looking crash and aftermath, Silvestri’s Instagram account indicated the rider was recovering in a hospital and was expected to make a full recovery. “After being hospitalized under medical supervision overnight, Debora Silvestri continues to progress favorably. He is in good spirits and strength to face his recovery, and will remain in hospital for the next few hours for continued monitoring,” her team, LABORAL Kuxta Team, shared.
“The team’s medical staff trusts their condition to continue to improve. From the team we will keep you updated on its evolution. Both the cyclist and the team want to sincerely thank all the messages of support and encouragement received in the last hours.”
The news is welcome for viewers of the clip, who thought it looked like the injured cyclist landed on her neck, and upon going limp in the immediate aftermath, could easily have been paralyzed. The Christian Tribune will continue to monitor the recovery of Silvestri.
