Democratic Governor Gretchen Whitmer recently found herself at the center of controversy after a video was shared to social media showing her suggestively feeding a Dorito to a feminist influencer that many interpreted as mocking Eucharist.  However, Whitmer has since apologized for the video, maintaining that it was “misconstrued” and she did not intend to mock Christianity.

“Over 25 years in public service, I would never do something to denigrate someone’s faith. I’ve used my platform to stand up for people’s right to hold and practice their personal religious beliefs,” Whitmer said in a statement to Fox 2 Detroit. “My team has spoken to the Michigan Catholic Conference. What was supposed to be a video about the importance of the CHIPS Act to Michigan jobs, has been construed as something it was never intended to be, and I apologize for that,” she said.

Michigan Catholic Conference CEO Paul A. Long explained how the position and posture in which Whitmer fed the Dorito to feminist influencer Liz Plank was meant to imitate how Catholic’s receive communion.  “It is not just distasteful or ‘strange,’ it is an all-too-familiar example of an elected official mocking religious persons and their practices. While dialogue on this issue with the governor’s office is appreciated, whether or not insulting Catholics and the Eucharist was the intent, it has had an offensive impact,” he said.

The Christian Tribune previously reported on backlash from social media users over the video. “How else can this be interpreted other than mockery of Catholics and the sacrament of Holy Communion, not to mention the distasteful pornographic innuendo? Gretchen Whitmer is only the latest example of the gross anti-Catholic bigotry festering inside the Democratic Party.” Another said, “They know precisely the evocative nature of this video and its semblance to Holy Communion This is disrespectful at best.”

Another person wrote, “No Catholic should ever vote Democrat anyway, but unfortunately many do. This ludicrous, perverted, blasphemous little performance should be enough to convince everyone of just how much Democrat elites hate Catholics.” One user weighed in,“God will not be mocked! The presence of God in this world – lies in the Holy Eucharist. And while evil may try to mock that, it will always remain true and good, and its power will always be greater than that of evil.”
