Recently, at a drag service at Cathedral of Hope, a United Church of Christ (UCC) congregation, one of the reformers threatened Trump supporters and Texas Governor Greg Abbot. The performer, who has not been identified, joked that they wanted to prevent Abbot, who is wheelchair-bound, from accessing the Texas state house by demolishing wheelchair ramps. The online response was highly negative, and many condemned the outrageous performance.

“If any of you voted for Trump, please don’t tell us,” the drag queen said, provoking a round of applause from the audience. No, don’t tell us … or do y’all sacrifice? Could we start?” Later, when  someone in the audience pointed to another person, the performer asked, “He voted for Trump?” After the attendee denied it, the drag performer said, “OK, ‘cause I will kill him.”

The activist shared a story about a group of drag queens that wanted to ‘Fistfight” Greg Abbot. “He just wouldn’t stand up and fight me,” the drag performer said, adding, “I think that’s the easiest thing we can do with the money that we raise is take away those wheelchair ramps, not let him have access to the [Texas House] floor,” the speaker said.

Cathedral of Hope is a highly progressive church in Austin, Texas. According to the website,” We understand that gender and gender identity has been highlighted in recent weeks. We understand that there is a difference between drag as an art form and transgender as an identity. However, these are often conflated and politicized, often determined as “sin” by some in Christianity.”

“Our aim is to lift up these communities as a part of the LGBTQ+ community and their impact on our movement,” the church added. “We do not believe that God makes mistakes”, stated Reverend Dr. Neil G. Thomas, our Senior Minister.” They explain that, “God is beyond gender and invites us to bring our whole selves into the world to make it a better place. Drag has a long history in our community and targeting them will be resisted.”

“As a community of faith, we stand with our drag and transgender community. Using faith language as a mandate for these targeted attacks is a travesty and an infringement of civil liberties,” concluded the church. In another bizarre clip of this service, “drag king” Rev. Brock Bottom (pronouns He/They), preached on drag and gender issues.

“Good morning. Would you pray with me? Come Holy Spirit into the hearts of all of your beloved children, Kindle within us the fire of your unending and relentless love. All of my words and our hearts together, honor you today. Oh God, our rock and our Redeemer, amen,” the bizarrely dressed reverend began. Rev. ‘Brock Bottom then pivoted to a discussion of drag.

” But performing gender as a daily task, I would argue, is a learned cultural trait to which we have all been exposed as understandings of drag have changed throughout history,” the woke pastor said. “Perhaps drag today could be defined as that which threatens the already fragile and arbitrarily constructed framework for gender performance that is necessary to maintain power dynamics.”

“Conversely, it could also be that from the moment we were born, and perhaps even before that, when families gather to reveal the sex organs of their child, that the drag show begins, the blue confetti falls and the pink smoke clears, and there’s a mad dash to project cultural and societal expectations gender performance onto that child,” the pastor claimed.

Watch the Clip Here:

“These are learned behaviors can be shaped either through shame or affirmation based on a perceived correct performance of drag. It has a profound effect on our imagination, and our self-worth, and our relationship to the world,” Bottom concluded. Online responses to this bizarre display were very negative. Many commenters objected to the bizarre appearance and convoluted arguments in the clip.
