The faith-based movie Unsung Hero recently enjoyed a successful opening weekend at the box office, bringing in roughly $8 million. The Christian film was produced by the same studio that brought audiences to the popular film Jesus Revolution.
Unsung Hero recounts the true story of the family behind the famous Christian band for King + Country. The movie was released in theaters nationwide on Friday, April 26th, and it superseded expectations, reaching second in the domestic box office after earning around $7.8 million.
“We are thrilled that families in America see themselves in ‘UNSUNG HERO,’” Kevin Downes, Co-Founder and CEO, of Kingdom Story Company recently told the Daily Wire. “It’s a beautiful story about resiliency and reliance on faith, which we know is a strong message that our country needs right now.”
Downes further explained how the Smallbone family shared their experience cinematically, hoping to inspire others. “The Smallbone family put their story on the screen to inspire other families, and that’s just what we’re seeing,” he added. “We are encouraging the audience to lean into the power of family and to lean into sharing this film with their moms.”
The CEO emphasized that the film is centered around celebrating mothers and how they are an essential anchor in a family. Prior to the Mother’s Day holiday, Downes urged moviegoers to watch the film with their moms as an act of appreciation.
“At its core, this film celebrates moms and what they do for their families,” he added. “We are hearing from moms that they feel ‘seen’ in this movie in a way they haven’t seen themselves on screen before. As we look towards Mother’s Day, we will be encouraging our audience to take the mom in their lives to experience the film in theaters.”
The film details the experience of the Smallbone family, who packed up and moved from Australia to Nashville in the 1990s in search of a better future. Brother Luke and Joel Smallbone, alongside Joshua Walsh and Justin Tolley, produced the movie.
A description of the Unsung Hero read When David Smallbone’s successful music company collapses, he moves his family from Australia to the United States in search of a brighter future. With nothing more than their six children, their suitcases, and their love of music, David (for KING + COUNTRY’s Joel Smallbone) and his pregnant wife Helen (Daisy Betts) set out to rebuild their lives from the ground up. Based on a remarkable true story, a mum’s faith stands against all odds; and inspires her husband and children to hold onto theirs.”
According to Rotten Tomatoes, the film has received a near-perfect audience score of 99%, garnering raving reviews. “I love true stories and this one was a about a struggling family overcoming what seemed to be insurmountable odds to achieve success for the Glory of God. What better story could there be,” according to one review.
“Best movie i have ever seen. Just goes to show you that no matter the struggle, as long as you pray snd believe In God and know God has your back, he will always have your back,” another person wrote. See a trailer for the film below:
