Hurricane Helene left a massive swath of destruction across the southeast. Multiple storms landed shortly afterward, which caused thousands of people to flee the path of the storm. It seems as if western Florida was destined for destruction. One mayor in Florida gave a haunting warning: “Evacuate or you will die.” As Hurricane Milton headed up the coast, a viral story of hope took the internet by storm
Daniel Beasley made a viral post on social media. It read “If you are headed North to escape the Cat 5 coming in and need a safe place to be, I have 5 acres available just off I-75N where we have WiFi, a generator, Laundry, parking , RV space some electrical and water hook-ups. Pets and large animals welcome. We can make it work just hit my DM’s or just reply below for directions. God Bless be safe !”
The Georgia man offered his five-acre property to those displaced by the storm. He graciously offered accommodations for animals of any size. He also said he was making BBQ for the expected visitors. He quickly added: All free too. I think I forgot to write that part.” Within a few short hours, the post was viewed more than 7 million times.
The post gathered 6,000 comments and more than 41,000 reposts. In another post, he added, “I have to work today, but I will take off as soon as anyone shows up. Drive ON the grass and find a shaded spot ! DM me if this is your destination and we will figure it all out on the fly! God Bless be safe, show patience in all this traffic and know God loves you.”
He spoke to reporters to update them on the situation. Beasly explained, “I am continuing to work full time and I am handling a high volume of calls.” At the time nobody had taken him up on his offer, but he has promoted other resources: “Atlanta Motor Speedway is less than 45 minutes from my house and has many more resources. But I encourage everyone to come by and stay if they want, especially those who have animals that need a fenced-in area.”
This inspiring story has inspired others to offer what they have to the people displaced by the hurricane. Another Georgian offered “I’m in Twiggs County Ga, only 10 acres but I can handle a few RVs too. Dm me too.” One volunteer from Tennessee said “I’m in middle Tennessee. We’re not going to be affected. We have wide open land that would be safe.”
Mr. Beasley has been swamped with well-wishers as thousands noticed his generous offer. He succinctly summarized his motivation: I’m just trying to get into heaven with my wife!” While Beasley was inspiring in the face of the hurricane, this pastor used the opportunity to enrich himself. A pastor from North Carolina has been arrested and charged with misusing funds donated for hurricane relief. He has a criminal record of financial crimes going back nearly 20 years.
