“Great Peace in Jesus”: Christian Actor Kelsey Grammer Opens Up on Faith Journey, Refuses to Apologize for Faith

Speaking in an interview back in the spring of 2023 about his faith, actor Kelsey Grammer, who is best known for his role as Frasier Crane, the character he portrayed on the TV show Frasier and Cheers for 20 years, spoke out about his Christian faith and how Jesus has made a major difference in his life.

Particularly, Grammer focused on how even as he wrestled through his faith, sometimes embracing and sometimes rejecting it, he eventually managed to find permanent faith and realize how important Jesus is, letting Him into his life and finding great peace when he did so.

Introducing the matter, Grammer said, “I’ve had hiccups. I’ve had some tragic times. I have wrestled with those and worked my way through them: sometimes rejecting faith, sometimes rejecting God even, in a period of being pretty angry about it, like, ‘Where were you?’ That kind of thing.”

Continuing, Grammer noted how he found peace and said that his faith is not something for which he will apologize, saying, “But I have come to terms with it and have found great peace in my faith and in Jesus. It’s not cavalier – Jesus made a difference in my life. That’s not anything I’ll apologize for.”

During the interview, Grammer also spoke about how he grew up as a cross between a free spirit and a “square,” saying, “I was squarish, but I also thrived in the more current movements of my generation at the time. (Laughs.) I had long hair, I was a surfer, but I also was a pretty dedicated scholar. I wasn’t a pothead, as we used to call it – I was sort of a standard alcoholic yahoo. I’d go and have a beer or two, you know?”

Commenting on how that worldview impacted his view of Christ, Grammer added, “I celebrated with my peers the idea that we could love each other and love well, and that it would enhance our lives. I think that’s the most attractive part of this movement still. There’s a religious component of it through Christ, but Christ was the first hippie. “Love your enemies” – I mean, that’s extraordinary stuff.”

Grammer also commented on the Alec Baldwin “Rust” shooting situation, saying, “No. My heart goes out to everyone involved. A difficult thing has happened, and consequences come along for the ride. I’m here and I’m still a friend of his. I hope it all goes as it’s meant to go.”

In a separate interview, Grammer spoke about his character in “Jesus Revolution,” saying he “is a man looking for his own faith and finds it as well. A man whose church is empty. He can’t get traction and he’s started to think he’s going to be fired from his job as a pastor.” he continued, “This hippie comes into his life. And he finds new purpose and started a movement that’s still going. It’s extraordinary.”
