NFL coach Jim Harbaugh, a devout Christian, made headlines for his ongoing support of pro-life organizations, with one sports outlet reporting that the coach had donated hundreds of thousands of dollars of his personal funds to groups that protect unborn life, leading commenters on social media to commend him for his bold faith.
For background, on August 12, 2025, ML Football reported that Los Angeles Chargers head coach Jim Harbaugh has donated hundreds of thousands of dollars to pro-life organizations, standing firm on his faith and the value of unborn life, and serving as an example for fans of the sport.
In addition, during his tenure as a coach for the Michigan Wolverines, Harbaugh publicly declared that if someone in his family or program had an unplanned pregnancy, he and his wife would “raise that baby.” He went on to say, “I’ve told [them] the same thing I tell my kids, boys, the girls, same thing I tell our players, our staff members. I encourage them if they have a pregnancy that wasn’t planned, to go through with it, go through with it.”
Continuing, Harbaugh doubled down on his pro-life stance, saying it is directly informed by his Catholic faith. “I believe in having the courage to let the unborn be born,” he said, adding, “I love life. I believe in having a loving care and respect for life and death. My faith and my science are what drive these beliefs in me.”
Moreover, Harbaugh said that his top priorities in life are “faith, family, football,” but added, “I just think that … the abortion issue is one that’s so big that it needs to be talked about. It needs serious conversation. What do you think? What do I think? What do others think?” He clarified, “It’s a life-or-death type of issue. And I believe in, and I respect, people’s views.”
In addition, Harbaugh was emphatic that “any player” on his team, or “any female staff member or any staff member or anybody in our family or our extended family” could come to him and his wife, Sarah, if they had an unplanned pregnancy. He continued, “We got a big house; we’ll raise that baby.”
However, Coach Harbaugh’s bold pro-life statements clashed with the stance taken by University of Michigan President Mary Sue Coleman, who wrote, “I strongly support access to abortion services, and I will do everything in my power as president to ensure we continue to provide this critically important care.” She added, “I am deeply concerned about how prohibiting abortion would affect U-M’s medical teaching, our research, and our service to communities in need.”
When the news of Harbaugh’s donations to pro-life organizations broke on social media, commenters celebrated, with the X user That Catholic Guy writing, “Man… if I’d known this sooner, my closet would already be 90% Chargers gear.” Another commenter chimed in, “Good for Jim. He is doing right by defending the most innocent among us. For God makes it clear in his word that he knows us while we are in the womb.”
