Ahead of the 2024 election, the United States is at a pivotal moment that will have profound implications for the future of the nation. Therefore, both Republicans and Democrats are urging their respective bases to show out at the ballot box while vying for undecided swing state voters. Within the conservative evangelical community, there have been increased efforts to get Christians out to vote in opposition to the left, whose values have become increasingly at odds with Christianity.
Ian Giatti, a reporter for the Christian Post, recently launched a podcast that discusses American politics with prominent Christian leaders. “We want to really focus our audience and Christians at large in America to start thinking about the significance of this election,” he said, as reported by the Christian Post. The reporter further explained that he wants to “get Christians engaged and involved” in their civic duties.
“[We want to take] a look at where we’ve been as a country and as the Church,” he said, noting that Christians have been an undeniably powerful influence over the United States. “The history of the religious right movement, for example, the Moral Majority, how Evangelicals have influenced politics over the last half-century.”
Christians have always been called to be engaged members of the society around them, with the goal of shaping culture to honor Christ and the Gospel. “[We want to] make sure Christians understand — please, please go out and vote, regardless of what you may think about election integrity, regardless of what you may think about all that’s going on,” he said. “Go and carry out our civic duty.”
As modern culture continues to evolve, for better or worse, the church has an unquestionable role not to shy away from engaging in culture. Giatti said, “I think we, as the Body of Christ, need to start thinking practically. … I think we need to start understanding what it looks like to apply what we learned through the Word and in fellowship and take it into the world and into the culture.”
The Christian Tribune reported on comments from former President Donald Trump who urged Christians to get out and vote for him in November. Speaking at the at the Danbury Institute’s Life & Liberty Forum last month, Trump promised that the Christian faith will “make a comeback.” He also warned the group of evangelicals that the modern left presents a unique threat to Christianity, further calling on the group to show out and vote for the sake of their faith.
“I hope we’ll be defending them side by side for your next four years. These are going to be your years, because you’re going to make a comeback like just about no other group. I know what’s happening. I know where you’re coming from and where you’re going, and I’ll be with you side by side. So again, thank you once again for everything you do. And you have to get out and vote. Our religious leaders have to get their incredible people that love them so much and respect them so much. Have to get them out to vote,” he said.
