Man With Severe Case Of Cerebral Palsy Defies Condition, Becomes First Man To Complete Marathon As Internet Reacts With Astonishment

A viral video made the rounds on the internet, which reacted with praise and celebration, after a man with severe cerebral palsy became the first recorded person in the world with his diagnosis to complete a marathon. Alex Roca Campillo of Spain was identified as having a case of brain herpes, which later developed cerebral palsy. Doctors said the condition was so severe and advanced that they did not expect him to live beyond childhood.

Defying those odds, Campillo survived, although the left hemisphere of his brain never matured and he relies on a shorthand of sign language to communicate and is physically impaired. Nonetheless, the man who has inspired millions around the world remained undeterred.

In 2019, he became the first person in his state to complete the rigorous six-day Garmin Titan Desert Race in the Moroccan mountains, something most people without his limitations could accomplish. That impressive feat did not garner as much worldwide attention, as biking is less mainstream.

However, it was his marathon finish in the spring of 2023 at the Barcelona marathon that Campillo became an international sensation. Not only did the man finish, he ran it in a fantastic sub-hour time, again something most people might not be able to achieve.

“DISABILITY NEVER DEFINES: Meet Alex Roca Campillo, he has cerebral palsy and became the first person in the world with a 76% disability to finish a marathon,” wrote the account Restoring Your Faith in Humanity on the social media platform X. “He showed the world that a person’s inabilities don’t determine their value or potential.”

Reacting to the post, one user wrote that people should never accept what others define as a limitation. “Àlex Roca Campillo proved that your body doesn’t define your capacity. From being told he wouldn’t walk to finishing the Barcelona Marathon, he is a reminder to never listen to the ‘no’ in the room.”

“Seventy-six percent disability. Finishes a marathon. First in the world.
The numbers don’t add up. The math doesn’t care,” wrote another. “Amazing. Watching him complete a marathon while I struggle to walk 30m blocks (ill health provoked). Proud of him. 6hrs!? Definitely impressed,” added a third.

“Truly AMAZING! Nothing stopping him going on to run many more! Just goes to show, no goal is out of reach which any disability, if you put your mind to it! GREAT GREAT Achievement!” contributed a fourth commenter.
