A group of Republican lawmakers has introduced a resolution that condemns the persecution of Christians in Muslim-majority countries, with two Christians leading the charge and calling for the government to make religious freedom a priority within the country’s foreign policy.

For background, on July 18th, 2025, Rep. Riley Moore (R-WV) and Sen. Josh Hawley (R-MO) introduced H. Res. 594, which calls for the United States to intervene in countries where Christians are being violently persecuted by Muslims, such as Nigeria, Egypt, Algeria, and Iran. In addition, the resolution was endorsed by multiple Christian advocacy groups, including Alliance Defending Freedom International, CatholicVote, and several others.

In a statement published alongside the resolution, Rep. Moore drew attention to the violence and persecution Christians face around the globe, saying, “Our brothers and sisters in Christ face rampant persecution for simply acknowledging the name of Jesus. That is unacceptable.”

Continuing, the congressman said, “In Nigeria alone, more than 50,000 Christians have been martyred and more than 5 million have been displaced simply for professing their faith.” He continued, “During a Divine Liturgy in Damascus last month, an Islamic jihadist opened fire on worshippers and detonated an explosive device — killing at least 30 and wounding dozens more. These examples illustrate the violence and death Christians face on a daily basis.”

Moreover, Sen. Hawley also issued a statement, saying, “Our country was founded on religious liberty,” and adding, “We cannot sit on the sidelines as Christians around the world are being persecuted for declaring Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior.” Furthermore, Sen. Hawley called for the United States to “condemn these heinous crimes.”

Building on his statement, Sen. Hawley said that each year, “the number of Christians murdered by extremists in Nigeria has numbered in the thousands.” He added, “Millions more have been displaced. We cannot allow this to continue. I urge my colleagues to join me in condemning the persecution of Christians around the world by supporting this resolution.”

Additionally, in a speech delivered on the Senate floor alongside the introduction of the bill, Sen. Hawley called for President Trump to pardon “pro-life prisoners” who he said had been unfairly prosecuted by the Biden administration. The senator’s request came several months after President Trump pardoned 23 pro-life activists, saying, “They should not have been prosecuted.”

After the resolution was introduced, Rep. Moore spoke to the Daily Wire about its contents, saying that it called for the U.S. to correct previous “foreign policy blunders” that led to increased persecution of Christians worldwide. Rep. Moore specifically referenced the 2003 invasion of Iraq.
