Shocking Survey Reveals That 30% of Americans Engage in Astrology, Tarot, and Other New Age Practices

A shocking study conducted by the Pew Research Center revealed that a growing number of adults in the United States are turning to new age practices like astrology, tarot, and consulting mediums, with a reported three in 10 Americans saying that they have used at least one of these practices in their lives, and 17% saying they have done so in the past year.

For context, a study published by Pew Research on May 21, 2025, showed that many Americans are now engaging with spiritually dubious new age practices, often for entertainment, including some Christians. In addition, the results of the study indicated that an astonishing 43% of women between the ages of 18 and 29 say that they believe in astrology, along with over a quarter of the total number of surveyed adults.

In addition, in a Pew report issued on May 21, Research Associate Chip Rotolo revealed that 30% of Americans say that they “consult astrology (or a horoscope), tarot cards, or a fortune teller at least once a year,” going on to add that most of the surveyed Americans engage with these practices “just for fun, and few Americans say they make major decisions based on what they learn along the way.”

In addition, Rotolo added that Americans who identify as members of the LGBT community “are especially likely to consult astrology or a horoscope, and tarot cards.” More specifically, the study’s results indicate that 54% of individuals who identify as part of the LGBT community use astrology or a horoscope “at least once or twice a year.”

Disturbingly, Rotolo pointed out that of the individuals surveyed who identified as Christians, “16% say they believe in astrology.” However, Rotolo clarified that belief in horoscopes is more common among people who identify as “spiritual but not religious.” In addition, Rotolo said that women are “twice as likely as men to believe in astrology.”

Furthermore, the results of the study indicated that 10% of Americans “consult tarot cards at least annually,” with Rotolo adding that of that group, “religiously unaffiliated Americans are slightly more likely than religiously affiliated Americans to say they consult tarot cards at least yearly.” Rotolo clarified that the people who say they are most likely to “never engage” in practices like tarot are “white evangelicals and atheists.”

Adding to the disturbing nature of the study’s results, Rotolo explained that 21% of LGBT individuals say that “when they make major life decisions, they rely at least a little on what they’ve learned from a fortune teller, tarot cards, astrology, or a horoscope.” Rotolo added that this number is “considerably larger than the share of any other demographic subgroup that says this.”

The study’s results did not shock everyone. When CBN’s Billy Hallowell interviewed former psychic-turned-Christian Jen Nizza about the study, Jen said, ““I thought it was horrific, to be quite honest with you, but I can’t say that I’m completely surprised,” adding, “Whether you believe [in psychic powers] or not and you’re just doing it [or it is] for entertainment, you’re opening a demonic door, which is so heartbreaking.”
