The largest Christian denomination in the U.S. issued a formal resolution calling for the Supreme Court to overturn its ruling legalizing gay marriage, along with several other pieces of legislation that go against traditional Christian values.
For context, in a resolution published in early June, the Southern Baptist Convention, the largest Protestant Christian denomination in the United States, called for the Supreme Court to overturn its 2015 decision on gay marriage. The resolution, titled “On Restoring Moral Clarity through God’s Design for Gender, Marriage, and the Family,” received widespread press coverage.
In the resolution, the denomination’s leaders made a list of statements focused on the traditional Christian view of marriage, stressing that free speech “is increasingly threatened by policies that compel individuals to speak
against their conscience, especially on matters of sex and identity.” Furthermore, the resolution argued that policies that “deny the biological reality of male and female” are “legal fictions.”
Continuing, the resolution made the case that such legal rulings “undermine the truth of God’s design” and “lead to social confusion and injustice.” The denomination also called for laws that “affirm marriage between one man and one woman, recognize the biological reality of male and female, protect children’s innocence against sexual predation, affirm and strengthen parental rights in education and healthcare, incentivize family formation in life-affirming ways, and ensure safety and fairness in athletic competition.”
Moreover, the resolution called for Christians to “celebrate and embrace marriage and childbearing,” adding that Christians should see “children as blessings rather than burdens (Psalm 127:3-5)” and embrace “the privilege of raising the next generation.”
The denomination also zeroed in on Planned Parenthood, saying that the organization “undermines parental rights” and “promotes harmful ideas about sex and the family, all while receiving taxpayer funds.” The SBC called for “a complete and permanent defunding of Planned Parenthood and for public funds to be directed to life-affirming healthcare providers.”
Importantly, the resolution was published just months after a federal investigation into the Southern Baptist Convention concluded in March 2025, focusing on concerns about systemic abuse and misconduct within the denomination. According to press accounts, the investigation ended with one conviction — former Southern Baptist Matt Queen, who pleaded guilty to lying to federal authorities.
In response to the conclusion of the investigation, Chief SBC Executive Committee member Jeff Iorg said, “We’re grateful that we can close this chapter in our legal proceedings and move forward.” In addition, two SBC lawyers issued a statement saying they were “pleased that the matter has been resolved without any charges or further expense against the EC or other SBC entities.”
