“Thank God the former President is Alive”: Christian Leaders Weigh in on Assassination Attempt

During a highly anticipated Pennsylvania rally on Saturday, former President Donald Trump survived a horrific attempt on his life.  As Trump was speaking, gunshots could be heard ringing out, where one appeared to graze the presumptive GOP nominee’s ear, as he could be seen grabbing the back of his head before the Secret Service swarmed him.  Trump then got up, blood streaked across the side of his face, giving a fist of power to the crowd who cheered on the president.

In the wake of the atrocity, which claimed the life of one Trump supporter, there has been an outpouring of prayers from the Christian community.  Many prominent faith leaders have delivered statements on the assassination attempt, calling for the nation to turn to God and attempt to return civility to politics.

“We pray for our country. No matter your political leanings or beliefs, we do not resolve our differences in America with acts of violence. We pray for peace and protection over our nation. God Bless America. We earnestly pray this nation would turn back to you Lord, your truth, and your leadership. Please pray for the family of the innocent bystander who was killed and others injured,” Young said.

“I thank God that former President @realDonaldTrump is alive.  Our prayers are also with the others injured at the rally today and the family of the individual who was killed,” Reverend Franklin Graham wrote on X, sharing an image of Trump after he hit the ground when the shot rang out.

Focus on the Family President Jim Daly gave a statement to the Christian Post where he expressed gratitude that the former president survived the assassination attempt and walked away with only minor injuries.  “We are grateful that President Trump was not seriously injured in the tragic shooting at a campaign rally in Pennsylvania this afternoon. We are praying earnestly for Mr. Trump and his family and the loved ones of the bystander who was killed — and we ask our fellow Christians to call on our mighty and merciful God to comfort all those affected.

However, Daly maintained that details are not confirmed and cautioned people from jumping to conclusion.  He further called for greater civility in the realm of politics which has become increasingly polarized in recent years.  “While the full details of what occurred are still rightfully being carefully investigated, it is in no way premature to call for Americans of all ideological perspectives, Republicans and Democrats alike, to commit to bringing greater civility to their advocacy in the public square … We should and must be better as a nation in our ability to lean into our shared humanity when we disagree on matters of public policy. Today’s events should steel our resolve to do just that moving forward.”

Donald Trump also commented on the incident on Truth Social.  “I want to thank The United States Secret Service, and all of Law Enforcement, for their rapid response on the shooting that just took place in Butler, Pennsylvania. Most importantly, I want to extend my condolences to the family of the person at the Rally who was killed, and also to the family of another person that was badly injured. It is incredible that such an act can take place in our Country. Nothing is known at this time about the shooter, who is now dead. I was shot with a bullet that pierced the upper part of my right ear. I knew immediately that something was wrong in that I heard a whizzing sound, shots, and immediately felt the bullet ripping through the skin. Much bleeding took place, so I realized then what was happening. GOD BLESS AMERICA!” Trump wrote.
