In a clip recently posted to social media, secretary of Housing and Urban Development Scott Turner opens Trump’s first cabinet meeting with a prayer. In the clip, Trump is flanked by Pete Hegseth, Marco Rubio, and, of course, Turner. In the prayer, Turner thanks God for his colleagues, particularly for President Trump. Trump has recently changed denominations and made a number of statements about his faith.
“Father, we thank You for this awesome privilege, Father, to be in your presence. God, thank You that You’ve allowed us to see this day. The Bible says that your mercies are new every morning, and Father, God, we give you the glory and the honor. Thank you, God, for President Trump. Father, for appointing us,” he began. ” Father, God, thank you for anointing us to do this job. ”
“Father, we pray you will give the President the Vice President wisdom. Father, God, as they lead. Father, I pray for all of my colleagues that are here around the table and in this room,” he prayed, ” Lord God, we pray that we would lead with righteous clarity, Father God, that as we serve the people of this country in every perspective, agency, every job that we have.”
“Father, we would humble ourselves before you, and we will lead in a manner that you’ve called us to lead and to serve. Father. The Bible says the blessed is a nation whose God is the Lord. But Father, we today honor you and in your rightful place, Father, thank you for giving us this opportunity to restore faith in this country and be a blessing to the people of America and Lord God today in our meeting”
We pray that you will be glorified in our conversation in Jesus’ name, Amen.” he triumphantly concluded. Online reactions were very positive. “Awesome & heartwarming to see this public prayer. This video does not show it, but right after Secretary Turner’s prayer, the two men at President Trump’s side [Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth] did the Sign of the Cross. Practicing Catholics!” said one user.
“I now consider myself to be a non-denominational Christian,” Trump said to RNS. “Melania and I have gotten to visit some amazing churches and meet with great faith leaders from around the world. During the unprecedented COVID-19 outbreak, I tuned into several virtual church services and know that millions of Americans did the same.” Trump has appeared at dozens of churches across the nation.

A large number of Americans think Trump isn’t deeply religious. A Public Religion Research Institute poll found that around 40 percent of Americans think the 45th president “is mostly using religion for political purposes.” White Evangelical Republicans, who voted for Trump in large numbers, see him differently. Fifty-nine percent of this demographic say the President-Elect has strong ties to faith.
