Pastor Lorenzo Sewell, has been in the headlines after he said President Donald Trump’s life was spared by a “millimeter miracle,” during his prayer at Trump’s inauguration on Monday. He was calling back to when Trump was nearly slain by an assassin at a rally in Butler, Pennsylvania on July 13, 2024. The shot passed through his ear and narrowly missed his brain.
Sewell prayed, “Heavenly Father, we’re so grateful that you gave our 45th and now our 47th president a millimeter miracle. We are grateful that you are the one that has called him for such a time as this, that America would begin to dream again.” He echoed Martin Luther King Jr.’s famous “I Have a Dream” speech, in the rest of his prayer.
We pray that we would fulfill the true meaning of our creed, that ‘we hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal'” He said, “We pray that you use our president, that we will live in a nation where we will not be judged by the color of our skin, but by the content of our character.” He continued the message by quoting from a classic hymn.
Earlier last year, He stated “We do believe that it is very difficult for you to be a Bible-believing Christian and be a Democrat. We do believe that. Do I have Democrats in my church? Absolutely. We do not believe that every Democrat is a demon, but we do believe that the Democratic platform is demonic.” He also explained his strong support for Donald Trump.
He explained that “we have to have that discernment.” He acknowledged that “Adversely, we don’t believe that every Republican is a revivalist. We don’t worship a donkey nor elephant. We worship the lamb that was slain.” However, the native of Detroit’s east side said there are very real problems with the platform of the Democratic Party.
However, Lorenzo Sewell has not always been in such a rarified company. He is the senior pastor of 180 Church in Detroit. He was born and raised on Detroit’s east side. As a young man, he faced numerous challenges including his father’s incarceration and the tragic loss of his younger brother. This life of hardship led him into a life of crime. Sewell eventually became a gang leader. However, during his senior year of high, he experienced a dramatic transformation.
He preaches at 180 Church on Detroit’s west side. The congregation welcomed Rump in June for a round table during the campaign. He explained “As he was leaving, I want you to imagine, over 100 Black Americans going toward him getting things signed. We gave him a cake.” After he prayed for Trump at the meeting, the President invited him to speak at the inauguration.

He recalled that “He said ‘You prayed that way for me, at the inauguration, you’ll be there.'” He continued to say, “When I received the phone call, I started crying. I cried because I felt like Jesus wanted me to do something on Monday. I don’t believe this is about me. I think this is about people that are hurting in Detroit.” “It has nothing to do with Lorenzo. It has nothing to do with my church or my relationship with President Trump. It has everything to do with those who are voiceless. Now, they get a voice,” he added.
