Known for her role in “Duck Dynasty” as “Mrs. Kay,” Kay Robertson, wife of family patriarch Phil Robertson, recently spoke to her granddaughter Sadie Robertson Huff about faith, life, and marriage in a conversation published on Sadie’s Live Original blog. Their conversation came after the release of “The Blind,” a biopic that tells the story of Phil Robertson’s struggles with alcohol and the redemption that came when he found Christ.
Speaking to Sadie about marriage, Kay said, “When I was young, my Nanny told me that one day I’d have to fight for my marriage.” Continuing, she explained how that made little sense to her when she was young, but proved to be right about her marriage with Phil, “As a little girl, it didn’t make much sense to me. I had read lots of fairy tales, and none of them included a woman having to fight for anything. I didn’t know it then, but my Nanny was right.”
Continuing, she spoke about being “teenagers in love” with Phil, but by the time a decade of marriage had passed, he was a drunk “doing almost every terrible thing under the sun.” She added, “Everyone I knew told me to leave him.” But she didn’t. Instead, she stuck by Phil, remembering her Nanna’s words, and made their marriage work and Phil redeemed himself through God. She said, “But our story didn’t end there. After a decade of living inside a nightmare, Phil finally let God into his heart, and our lives changed forever.”
She then added that Phil is embarrassed by The Bling “because he doesn’t like to remember that part of his life…but Phil also wants people to see his story, to see that no one is too far gone for God.” However, it has done much good in showing the transformative effect faith in Jesus can have.
Continuing, she argued that faith in Christ is redeeming and can make a huge difference in struggling marriages. “I’ve seen firsthand the way God can turn lives around,” she continued. She then added, “I want the women out there who are hurting because their husbands are hurting to know that there’s always hope in Jesus. I want the men to know they can become the husband, the father, and the man God made them to be.”
This wasn’t the first time that Miss Kay has spoken about her tumultuous relationship with Phil in a very open way. In a recent post on Instagram, for example, she wrote, “I love Phil, and I really want y’all to know that the hard years were worth it to get to where we are today.”
She continued, “Our early years were messy, and I never dreamed our family would turn that story into a movie. But the Lord really does turn messes into messages, and THE BLIND movie is proof of that. If the story of Phil’s wild, godless years can help point people to Jesus, that’s the story we’ll keep telling.”
