Back in 2021, Harvest Christian Fellowship pastor and Christian author Greg Laurie spoke with rock star Alice Cooper. Best known for his Shock Rock songs and performances, Cooper turns out to be a faithful Christian with a deep commitment to his faith in Jesus. During the interview, Cooper spoke about his faith in Jesus and why he thinks people try to avoid becoming Christian, saying that they see it as interfering with their “godhood.”
Laurie, posting about the interview, said, “Had an amazing time today with my friend, Alice Cooper in Arizona. Alice talks about the emptiness of the life of the pursuit of fame and how he found everything he is looking for in his relationship with Christ. There is a lot of lore told about Alice, some true, some fiction. But I can tell you, having spent time today and other times I have been with him, this guy knows the Lord!”
During the interview, Cooper told Lauri that while Jesus is the most written about historical figure, many people still do their best to avoid believing in Him, closing their eyes and ears to the truth. He said, “He’s not preached enough. [He’s] the most written about character of all time in history, and yet people go out of their way to not believe in Him.”
Continuing, Cooper explained why he thinks people do so much to avoid placing their faith in the Lord above, saying that it interferes with their self-conception. He told Laurie, “I think it’s because they don’t want to give up their godship,” Cooper said. “They believe the Hollywood version of ‘Oh, I do more good than bad,’ that kind of thing. And I go ‘boy, Satan has you right where he wants you, to believe that.’”
Then, quoting John 14:6, Cooper said he finds it impossible to deny the truth of the Bible and the fact that Jesus is the one true path to salvation, the truth that so many people do their best to dodge. He said, “Because ‘I’m the Way, the Truth, and the Life and no one comes to the Father but by Me,’ those are the truest words ever spoken. How can you deny that? So, as far as I’m concerned, my life is based on that now. It’s not based on my rock and roll, it allows me to be a rock and roller, but, ‘follow Me.’”
He used that profession of faith to explain how his family tries to support Christian music and that there are many Christian rockers out there to support. Doing so, he said, “So my wife and I both, our kids, is a Christian lifestyle. But again, it’s the old saying ‘Why should the devil have all the good music.’ Yeah, there’s a lot of Christian rockers out there, I just happen to be the most vocal.”
