Before Trump was sworn in as president, he attended a Church Service at S.t. John’s Episcopal church across from the Whitehouse. In a moment that went viral, the pastor nagged the freshly sworn-in president to “have mercy” on immigrants and transgender children. Bishop Mariann Edgar Budde was made “one final plea.” In response, thousands of woke Christians have signed a petition supporting the bishop.
The petition, dramatically titled We Are Standing With You, offered the embattled bishop support for her anti-Trump rant. As of the time of writing, the petition has gathered nearly 6.000 signatures. The petition begins by clarifying who is writing it; ” We, the undersigned clergy, wish to express our profound support for your courageous and unwavering commitment to speaking the truth of the gospel during the Inaugural Prayer Service held at the National Cathedral.”
It goes on to overdramatize the events. “Your invocation of justice and compassion during such a pivotal event illuminated the path forward for all of us who seek a more equitable and inclusive society,” says the description. “At a time when unbridled power threatens to overshadow the cries of the vulnerable your willingness to stand firm in your convictions remind us that faith and justice must go hand in hand”
It adds that ” ..the Church has a vital role in holding leadership accountable. Your voice echoes those who have felt marginalized and unheard, bringing attention to the pressing issues that demand our collective focus and action. “Your words resonate with a sense of hope, and challenge us all to be agents of positive change. Your prophetic witness encourages us to engage with the moral challenges we face as a nation,” the survey said.
It went on to praise the bishop with flowery language. ” Thank you for your unwavering belief in the transformative power of truth and your tireless efforts to promote justice and equity. We stand with you in your mission to uphold truth, justice, and compassion and pledge our support in any future endeavors that advance these essential values within our communities and society at large,” the petition read.
The survey concluded by saying, “Your courage has not gone unnoticed, and we are grateful for your steadfast leadership during these critical times. ” Shortly after the inciting incident, Trump fired back at bishop Budde. Trump was unimpressed with the message; he said it was “not too exciting.” Trump later laid into her as “The so-called Bishop who spoke at the National Prayer Service on Tuesday morning was a Radical Left hard-line Trump hater.”
He added, “She and her church owe the public an apology!” The president explained, “She brought her church into the World of politics in a very ungracious way. She was nasty in tone and not compelling or smart.” He noted that she “failed to mention the large number of illegal migrants that came into our Country and killed people.” The woke bishop was unbothered by his criticism, “That is for other people to judge, and so he is certainly entitled to his opinion.”

Speaking after the drama erupted, Budde said, “The real people who are in danger are those who are fearful of being deported. The real people who are in danger are the young people who feel they cannot be themselves and be safe and who are prone to all kinds of both external attacks and suicidal responses to them,” she claimed. “So I think we should keep our eyes on the people who are really vulnerable in our society.”
