Student at the University of Georgia gave their lives to Christ when baptized in pickup truck beds in a parking lot. Such is what the organization Unite Us organized, gathering thousands of students for a prayer service and parking pickup trucks with water in their beds in which they could be baptized nearby, if they felt so moved by the prayer service.
The event occurred at UGA’s Stegeman Coliseum on April 3, 2024. It was part of the Unite Georgia conference, a free event hosted by Unite US. At the conference, speakers discussed the issues facing young people right now, played Christian music, and brought together thousands of students in the name of Jesus.
The Unite US is the creation of founder Tonya Prewett. Prewett, a retired educator, began it as a prayer group at Auburn University. It eventually grew from less than a half-dozen students to hundreds, then grew to more schools and events across the southeast at which thousands of students showed up to hear the good news and get baptized.
Among those schools to which it expanded was UGA. One student who attended and was baptized, Nate Kearns, appeared on Fox News Channel’s “The Ingraham Angle” to speak about it. He said, “I just heard the call from the Lord, and he said, ‘Be obedient.'” Kearns continued, “I listened to Him to take a step of faith and let my fraternity brothers watch that.”
Continuing, Kearns explained that though he grew up in the Christian faith culturally, he never really felt that he had an “intimate relationship with Christ.” So, when Unite Us was hosting an event, he showed up. Once there, Kearns said that he felt a call to respond to the Lord and get baptized, joining the Christian faith in a much more real way.
Kearns then spoke to Ingraham about God’s forgiveness and how he wants people to have a relationship with HIm and follow Him, saying, “No matter how broken you think you are, Jesus Christ’s love is more powerful than that, and He wants to enter into a personal relationship with you. If you call on the name of the Lord, you will not be forsaken.”
Mr. Prewett spoke about the event as well, saying that the huge success of it can only be explained by the “work of God.” He said, “We have thousands of students showing up at these events and hundreds giving their lives to Jesus, hundreds getting baptized.” He continued, “We’re hearing testimonies from these students saying, ‘Hey, I walked in contemplating suicide, but I left with the most joy and peace I’ve ever experienced.’ It’s just amazing and it’s moving.”
Further, he argued that students are looking for something more, and that “more” is true faith. He said, “They’re seeking for something, and what we’re bringing to them is just hope and truth, and we offer salvation and freedom and connection, and our prayer is that these students will leave this event and get connected in a local church or ministry and carry this on as a lifelong decision.”
