Vice President JD Vance Second Lady Usha Vance were confronted with pro-transgender hecklers in what was called an extremely ‘tone-deaf” protest as the White House envoy to Minneapolis’s Annunciation Catholic School went to lay flowers and pay their respects to the victims of a shooting days prior.
For context, The Christian Tribune previously reported that “the reason for the visit by the second family comes as the city of Minneapolis and the rest of the nation mourns the loss of two innocent children and a host of victims after a single gunman opened fire on August 27th from outside the exterior of Annunciation while everyone inside was gathered for Mass.”
In that report, comments from a video shared by the White House social media account Rapid Response focused heavily on the dignity displayed by both JD and Usha Vance. Dressed well, comported well, and displaying the proper solemnity and restraint required by a heartbreaking visit.
Still, the usual suspects were outside shouting at the pair for no other reason than they represented the administration of Donald Trump and the commensurate policies adopted by it vis-a-vis transgenderism. Donald Trump has previously declared through executive orders a distinction between male and female and issued bans on biological men competing in women’s athletics.
It is this stance that has outraged the woke left, and as the shooter at Annunciation self-identified as a member of the transgender community, activists and protestors decided that rather than join in mourning the loss of two beautiful, innocent children, they’d defend the shooter simply out of identity politics.
Fox News wrote that the “vice president and second lady Usha Vance were seen pausing for a moment in front of a statue of the Virgin Mary outside the church before he entered.” Then, as the pair entered, “protesters could be heard shouting various slogans, including ‘protect our kids,’ ‘you’re a coward’ and ‘do better.’”
At the same time as shouting, they were waving the flags now associated with the LGBT movement. Again, as noted, the shooter identified as transgender and given the declared role in the individual’s own battle with mental health and sense of purpose, so the protests struck a raw nerve as being out of touch.
Conservative commentator Dustin Grage posted on X some of the chanted slogans and then followed up noting that this was incredibly “tone deaf.” “Leftist protestors proceed to shout ‘You’re a coward’ and ‘do better’ while flying a rainbow flag…Talk about tone-deaf,” Garage wrote.

As mentioned, The Christian Tribune had previously shared that most of the reactions to the visit were positive. Even in the clip above, the gathering is small and insignificant. “Usha Vance appears incredibly dignified and respectful,” one commenter wrote. “May the grieving families find some measure of comfort in her presence.” The idea of dignity is one that resonated with many users on the Musk-owned social media platform. Even when people admitted to not liking Vance, they had to acknowledge he handled the moment with aplomb.
Other comments, while not downplaying the reason for the visit from the Vances, noticed that Second Lady Usha exuded many of the same qualities for which First Lady Melania Trump is so often praised. “She is so petite and beautiful,” one comment said. “Great to see people acting with grace, dignity and respect. Usha will be any bit as graceful as Melania I think,” said another.
