In a recently unearthed video, Actress Sheryl Lee Ralph of “Abbott Elementary” fame, compared Trump to the biblical character Barabbas in a politically tinged sermon. During her speech, the actress urged her audience to vote for Harris in the then-upcoming 2024 election and slammed Donald Trump with a series of unfair comparisons.
For context. Barrabas was the prisoner, traditionally referred to as a murderer or robber, who was freed by the mob at Jesus’s trial. Pontius Pilate, the Roman ruler of the area, let the crowd choose between Christ and the robber to be freed from captivity. Famously, the crowd asked for Barabbas to be pardoned, calling out, “Let his blood be upon us and our generations.”
In any case, Sheryl Lee Ralph began her shaky analogy by comparing the election to Christ’s trial in a rant on October 17, 2024. She said, “The people had a choice. They said, You can go with this, or you can go with that. You can go with this, the criminal. We know he is a criminal. He has proven to us that he is a criminal. That is why he is in chains. His name is Barabbas.”
Continuing her argument, she made the comparison more obvious. The actress declared, “Then we have that young man over here, I don’t know what he has done, but it seems that he has done nothing wrong, nothing wrong. And because it seems he has done nothing wrong, I’m not making the choice for the people. I am saying, I wash my hands of this, and I am giving you the people the choice.”
Connecting her torture analogy to modern politics, she said, “So let’s just make Barabbas in nowadays a convict, convicted of thirty-four felonies. Thirty-four felonies, oh, but before that, he was thinking, our new Barabbas was thinking, should he run for the presidency?”
Still not done, she repeated tired lies about Donald Trump. She claimed, “He said out loud, I could shoot somebody on Fifth Avenue and those blankety blanks would still vote for me. He got the money to start to run. He got on the bus, and he said I could grab women by the blankety blank and it would be alright when the five young men who did nothing wrong, but it took out $100,000 full page ad in the New York Times to say, basically, I don’t care if they’re innocent, they’re black, so they’re guilty.”
Concluding her rant, she took time to assure the audience that none of her claims were false. Ralph continued, “I’m not making this up, but guess what happened when he was running for the presidency? What did the people do? They voted for him. The people put Barabbas in office again. They let him go, and they crucified Christ. Eyes, the one who had done nothing wrong. They placed a thorn of crown of thorns on the head and speared the one who had done nothing wrong in the chest and they nailed Him to the cross.”

In the comments under a clip of her rant posted to social media, conservatives were incensed by her sacrilege. One such comment read, “I’ve been reliably told that comparing politicians to Christ is blasphemy. Oh wait…are we comparing a DEMOCRAT politician to Christ? Must be fine then. <\sarcasm>,” Another agreed, “Oh, dear Lord, please forgive her, she knows not what she do! What an absolute disgrace.”
