In a recent video posted to social media, PCUSA pastor Jen Strikland, argued that Christians should prioritize democratic policies over the gospel. She says that pastors need to address politics from the pulpit. Online commentators mocked her for the cat costume she wore during her sermon, and also for her politically biased sermon.
“But sometimes our faith directly intersects with challenging ideas and contentious topics and distressing events that are happening in our world, and we would not be doing our job if we did not talk about those with you here in this sacred space, some myself included would say that we need more regulations on guns,” she began. “There’s currently a lot of chaos, too many shootings, too much gun violence.”
“So I believe we need our politics to tighten up here and create a sturdier framework to help us thrive again as a society. Some myself included, would say that we need less regulation on our bodies. I believe women should be able to make their own decisions about their fertility and their health care,” Jen Strikland added. ” And gay and trans people should be able to do whatever they want with whomever they want, whenever they want to, and that is none of our business.”
“We are working to love our neighbors. How will we vote regarding affordable housing and immigration issues. If we’re working for peace, which candidates will we vote for, who can paint a vision of peace in our country and in places where there are currently wars happening?” she preached. ” Which candidates speak about the events of January 6 with the gravity and the abhorrence that they deserve?”
“And if we are working for peace, how will we vote regarding gun regulation if we’re working for justice, which candidates will we vote for who believe in the power of truth and the freedom of speech and the value of integrity and honesty?” she said. “Which candidates on the ballot will work to fight against racism, our country’s original sin, if we are working to cultivate compassion.”
“Which candidates will we vote for, who share our vision of affordable housing and affordable health care and reproductive freedom? How will we vote regarding unhoused citizens and drug-addicted citizens and our mentally ill citizens?” the woke pastor concluded. Online users were incensed by her political sermon. Many users mock her costume and arguments.
“What kind of strong delusion does someone have to be under to put an outfit like that on, and expect to be taken seriously?” one user said. One comment said, “Pro-tip for pastors: When you are indistinguishable from an SNL sketch, you need to stop.” Others questioned why churches like this even bother to self-describe as Christian, given their political priorities.

“I don’t understand how mainline denominations allow these churches to label themselves as Presbyterian, Methodist , etc,” another said. One user replied to the comment and said, ” Well, when in the PCUSA, you establish a polity of diversity of thought in all things, then you eventually stand for nothing, and then become critical of and offended by those who object to heterodoxy on the most essential doctrines.”
