President Donald Trump praised the heroics of 15th-century explorer Christopher Columbus as his administration continued with its acknowledgement of Europeans’ successful cross-Atlantic voyages that ultimately gave rise to the United States of America. He rightfully credited himself with swinging the pendulum away from the same-day alternative of Indigenous Peoples’ Day and ‘resurrecting’ the legacy of the Italian sailor.
For context, Columbus Day has been a federal holiday for decades, and as its designation can only come from – or be revoked – by Congress. That being said, the rise of anti-European, anti-America sentiment from far-left factions has overtime given rise to Indigenous Peoples’ Day, a holiday reframing that takes the same date as Columbus day and downplays his courage in favor of the people scattered across the great continents that he discovered.
In 2021, Joe Biden took the unprecedented steps to issue a joint proclamation commemorating both holidays. As he had no presidential authority to ignore Columbus Day, his actions were seen as the next best thing. Still, President Donald Trump has destroyed the woke left’s fever dream and returned Columbus to national prominence. Speaking at an event officially earmarked for Columbus, Trump spoke at length of his bravery, accomplishments, and legacy in a way not heard for years in America, let alone from the WHite House.
“Christopher Columbus changed the future of humanity forever, and in this administration, we know that Christopher Columbus is to us-he’s a hero. He’s a hero. I’ve-I say proudly. Somebody would say, “Oh, that’s a terrible thing. You know the fake news. Look at all of them back there. They’ll say, but I feel that I, with some of the people in this room, we resurrected Christopher Columbus. Christopher Columbus,” he said.
“I mean, you couldn’t even say his name. If you said his name, they’d start writing stories about you like you’re some kind of an evil. Now we’re very proud, and we have a statue of Christopher Columbus in front of the one of the most important buildings in Washington, the Executive Office Building right across the street, the Eisenhower Building, and everyone loves it. You know, we have. I’d love to tell you. I would love to tell you that I fight every day to keep that statue there, but nobody ever. All they do is say that I love that statue. So, but I shouldn’t do that. I make it too easy. But it’s true. We’re very proud to have it,” he added.
In a separate part of his speech, Trump took aim at the radical leftists coming to power within the Establishment Democrat Party. Indeed, hating Columbus is no longer fringe but decidedly mainstream. He first went after Michigan’s socialist Muslim Senate candidate Abdulraham El-Sayed.
“Yet, as you know, the radical left communists hate Columbus and they want to abolish Columbus Day. They’re still trying very hard. You know this guy? I call him Mohammed Al Fayad. Some people call him Abdul. I call him Mohammed. Somebody said why. I said I don’t know. I feel like it. But he wants to abolish Columbus Day. He wants the no reference to. Can you believe it? So we have people that these lunatics that are running. They’re all against Christopher Columbus.
“But I’ll tell you what-we’re going to be here almost two and a half years. He’s going to be so. He’s going to be so protected, like nobody’s ever been protected before, because they want to tear down the history and heritage that makes us who we are. Not only Columbus. I mean, we had a time when they wanted to rip down the statue of Abraham Lincoln. That was about the end. That was now we’ve hit pay dirt, you know. They wanted to because they thought he was a racist, but he’s the one that freed the country. He’s the one. When you talk slavery, you talk about Lincoln, the job he did, George Washington. They’ve taken the name of George Washington off schools,” he went on.
