WNBA star Sophie Cunningham released a powerful video of her being re-baptized after having drifted away from her faith and the church while growing up. Explaining that she had been baptized when she was younger, there was a call to embrace Christ’s love and salvation for her as a cognizant adult and truly understanding what the sacrament of baptism meant.
For context, Cunningham has made all sorts of life changes in the sport’s off-season. First, she resigned with her team, the Indiana Fever, for an additional year and the team has high hopes as league star Caitlin Clark recovers from various injuries that have plagued her recently. A star in her own right, Cunningham brings size and grit to the talented roster after she was traded from the Phoenix Mercury to partner up with Clarke. She has averaged just shy of 8 points and 3 rebounds a game in her career.
Then, Cunningham rededicated her life to Jesus Christ. After signing on April 12th, 2026 to a one-year deal to stay in Indiana after the trade, the 6’1’’ forward shared a video on April 15th of the same year receiving the holy rite of baptism at her church, Christ’s Church of the Valley in Peoria, Arizona.
“I got baptized when I was little but I was feeling a tug on my heart to do it on my terms as an adult! Such a fun, amazing day. Thank you Jesus,” she captioned in the viral video on her 1.8 million-follower TikTok account. Watch that video below:
Reporting the news, a self-styled ‘WNBA fangirl” account on X wrote of the video: “Indiana Fever player Sophie Cunningham was baptized this past weekend. It’s not just a headline , it’s a pretty big personal statement, especially with how visible she is right now going into the 2026 season. Praise God! Welcome sister Sophie!”
In response, Cunningham quoted the post, succinctly commenting that “Loving Jesus is fun, try it.” Comments on the post were very supportive, with one account remarking her ‘new life had begun. “Yay, Sophie! Your new life has begun! And at CCV! I love it!” the user stated.
At the time of Cunningham’s resigning with the Fever, COO and General Manager Amber Cox said she and the team were “thrilled to have Sophie back with the Fever and are grateful for her commitment to return and build on what we started a year ago.”
She added that Sophie’s deep threat and locker room presence made the team competitive and noted fans have taken to her. “Not only is Sophie one of the best three-point shooters in the league, but she is an exceptional teammate, both on and off the court,” Cox added. “She plays with infectious energy that impacts not only our team, but our fanbase as well,” she went on.
