At Donald Trump’s inauguration prayer service, the pastor nagged the freshly sworn-in president to “have mercy” on immigrants and transgender children. She was making “one final plea.” Trump was unbothered by the woke rant. The new president has announced plans to address the border crises. He has also taken action to end the woke insanity surrounding transgender policies.
Bishop Mariann Edgar Budde said “In the name of our God, I ask you to have mercy upon the people in our country who are scared now,” during her sermon at the National Cathedral. Trump and Vice President JD Vance watched unamused with their families. She added, “There are gay, lesbian, and transgender children in Democratic, Republican, and independent families, some who fear for their lives.”
She moved on to immigration: “Our God teaches us that we are to be merciful to the stranger, for we were all once strangers in this land.” When reporters asked Trump what he thought of the sermon, he responded “Was not too exciting, was it?” He added, “They could do much better.” While Trump remained stone-faced during the tirade, Vice President Vance can be seen wincing in embarrassment.
“The people who pick our crops and clean our office buildings, who labor in poultry farms and meat packing plants, who wash the dishes after we eat in restaurants and work the night shifts in hospitals ‒ they may not be citizens or have the proper documentation, but the vast majority of immigrants are not criminals” the Bishop added.
The woke minister called immigrants faithful members” of churches, temples, synagogues and other places of worship and said they were “good neighbors” who pay taxes. She concluded, “I ask you to have mercy, Mr. President, on those in our communities whose children fear that their parents will be taken away and that you help those who are fleeing war zones and persecution in their own lands to find compassion and welcome here.”
Budde has been critical of Trump for years, after she was consecrated as the ninth bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of Washington in 2011, was described as “unapologetically liberal” in a Washington Post article. In 2020 she announced she was “outraged” after Trump walked to St. John’s Episcopal Church, which is located across the street from the White House during the George Floyd riots.
Her remarks came after Trump signed a flurry of executive actions regarding transgender activists and illegal immigrants. In his unprecedented non-consecutive second term, Trump declared that the government does not recognize ‘gender’ and only acknowledges the two biological sexes. He also slashed several woke laws regarding sex and gender.

He also abolished a number of laws put in place by former President Joe Biden. Trump declared a national emergency at the southern border. He also authorized U.S. armed forces to repel “forms of invasion” at the U.S.-Mexico border. Most significantly, he officially ended birthright citizenship; the legal doctrine that holds anyone who is born within the boundaries of the US is a citizen.
