Failed Democratic candidate and progressive activist Stacey Abrams made a series of politically-charged statements about Christianity in an interview with NPR, pushing for Christians to embrace woke ideology and condemning conservatives for using “venom” against groups like undocumented immigrants and the LGBT community.

For background, in an interview with NPR’s Tonya Mosley on July 15, 2025, Stacey Abrams, known for her loss of the Georgia gubernatorial race, said that she was considering running for office again and spoke out about her leftist take on Christianity, which she implied that all believers should embrace.

Speaking to Mosley, Abrams said that her Christian faith is a key aspect of her political compass, but she only referred to social justice issues rather than the core tenets of orthodox Christianity. She told Mosley, “I cannot call myself a Christian and not believe that it is my responsibility to help the stranger, to help immigrants, to help the dispossessed.”

Moreover, Abrams said that the primary inspiration behind her progressive values was her parents, telling Mosley, “I watched my parents live those values that education matters, that faith matters, and that helping people matters.” She added, “And for me, those are the values that guide me, my faith first and foremost.”

Continuing, Abrams pointed to her focus on “education” and activism as being influenced by her woke spin on Christianity, saying, “I’m not expected to simply blindly behave.” She added, “The notion of free will exists because faith is when you have the information and you make the decision to do anyway, to do the things you need to do. And then ultimately, what ties it all together for me is the responsibility to serve others.”

In addition, Abrams said that she was considering running for office a third time, telling Mosley, “I truly have not made any decisions and that is in part because there’s an urgency to 2025 that we cannot ignore.” She continued, “My focus right now is on how do we ensure that we have free and fair elections in 2026? There’s a lot of hope being pinned on the ’26 midterms.”

Along with advocating for woke Christianity, Abrams said that she was afraid that America is moving toward autocracy under President Trump. She told Mosley, “We do not use the military against our own people, and yet that was violated with such nonchalance that it was stunning to me. The second was the arrest of Mayor Ras Baraka.”

Abrams went on to say that Mayor Baraka, who was arrested for unlawfully attempting to enter an ICE detention facility, “didn’t do anything,” adding, “but they felt very comfortable arresting a mayor for simply questioning the actions of leadership, and that, again, should be so chilling.”
