A woke, pro-LGBT priest is calling for all churches to celebrate Pride Month in June 2025, using inconsistent theological arguments to go against the traditional Christian doctrine of marriage being between one man and one woman.
For context, in an article that was originally posted on June 1, 2022, and updated on June 2, 2025 on the website Outreach, Fr. James Martin argued that Christians should embrace the celebration of “Pride Month,” which has historically taken place in the month of June and goes against traditional Christian teaching. The priest based his pro-pride stance on the idea that “for the LGBTQ person, pride is not about vanity but about human dignity.”
Writing for Outreach, which describes itself as an “LGBTQ Catholic Resource,” the priest made the case that there are “(at least) two kinds of pride,” adding that the first is “the satisfaction that can come from your own accomplishments,” which he said can “turn into vanity,” clarifying that this is “something to avoid.” However, Fr. Martin argued that there is a “second kind of pride” that is simply “a consciousness of one’s own dignity.”
Continuing, Fr. Martin wrote that the type of pride that is celebrated during Pride Month is “a recognition of the human dignity of a group of people who have, for centuries, been treated with contempt, rejection and violence.” In addition, Fr. Martin made the case that Catholics, and, implicitly, Protestant Christians as well, should “treat LGBTQ people with the ‘respect, compassion and sensitivity’ that the [Catholic Catechism] commands.”
Furthermore, the priest asserted that because members of the LGBTQ community have “felt insulted, rejected and unwelcome” in churches, it is Christians’ responsibility to “remind our LGBTQ friends that they are welcome in what is, after all, their church, too.” Moreover, Fr. Martin said that “being LGBTQ is a life and death issue” in many countries, adding, “The church is called to stand with these persecuted people throughout the year, but especially during Pride Month.”
In contrast, on the same day that Fr. Martin’s article was updated on Outreach, a group of Republican representatives introduced a resolution that declares that June is “Family Month” as opposed to Pride Month, making the case that this change would be a response to a “radical leftist agenda that seeks to erase truth, redefine marriage, and confuse our children.”
Additionally, the resolution, which was spearheaded by Illinois Congresswoman Mary Miller (R), argued that declaring June Family Month would “reject the lie of ‘Pride’ and instead honor God’s timeless and perfect design.” Moreover, providing additional context for the celebration of Pride Month in America, Rep. Miller and the others behind the resolution said that Americans are now “inundated with perverse Pride Month displays and events throughout the month of June that denigrate the nuclear family.”
In addition, also on June 3, the White House press secretary told reporters that President Trump has “no plans” to make any official proclamation that June 2025 is Pride Month or any other national holiday, adding, “This president is very proud to be a president for all Americans, regardless of race, religion, or creed.”
