Last weekend, minor league baseball player Wes Clarke was baptized on the field following a game in Nashville, Tennessee. Clarke was baptized by his fellow teammate Brewer Hicklen as fans watched the wholesome event, commemorating the baseball player’s giving his life to Jesus Christ. During his immersion, Clarke was wearing a T-shirt reading, “Jesus won.”
Following his baptism, Clarke took to social media to celebrate the powerful occasion. “Had the privilege of being baptized yesterday on the field by one of my good friends @brewerhicklen after our game. Thank you Jesus for this amazing moment in my life. I am incredibly blessed to be surrounded by so many supportive people. It was such a special night!” he wrote.
Popular faith-based sports account “Sports Spectrum” also posted about Clarke’s baptism, sharing footage of the event to X. God is at work at every level of the sports world. Furthermore, Reverend Franklin Graham commented on the monumental on-field baptism. “Now that’s what I call a great ending to a game! The @NashvilleSounds won on Sat. night, & afterwards, infielder @wesesame was baptized by his teammate in a big tub at home base. May God bless you Wes as you share Jesus Christ on the ball field & beyond!”
There have been numerous headlines this year showing many prominent figures, such as athletes and celebrities, getting baptized and giving their lives to Jesus Christ. The Christian Tribune reported on the high-profile baptism of Russell Brand earlier this year, where the famous actor celebrated his conversion to Christianity.
Brand noted the massive transformation he had undergone after surrendering to Jesus. “I’ve been a Christian a month now and it’s been a big change,” he said in a video shared to X. “Not that I’ve entirely changed as a person, of course I haven’t, but I’ve taken on a lot of new concepts and it changes you to accept that it’s not like you’re in a game show and by doing really, really good things you can get redeemed.”
Brand discussed the paramount importance of repentance to Jesus Christ, the only way to be redeemed from one’s sinful nature. Only by confessing and turning away from one’s sinful lifestyle can people find salvation provided by the grace of God through Jesus’s substitutionary sacrifice on the cross.
“No, repentance, to repent, means that you have to continually change and acknowledge that I am in a battle against myself,” he added. “That I need to surrender myself to an ever-present eternal and accessible Jesus. That mercy is something that’s been given to me, been granted to me, that I live with through love, not something that I can sort of win or achieve by doing good deeds.”
