Justin Pearson gave an address in 2023 to a Unitarian Universalist church in Memphis. The controversial minister, who was kicked out of the Tennessee legislature, started his sermon with an invocation to ‘Mother God.’ He then pivoted to a laundry list of woke platitudes. He gave more time to LGBTQ+ issues and racial grievances than the discussion of scripture.
“Mother God, Creator God, loving God, holy God. Take this Your servant made from dust, and connect it with the raw materials of stardust to speak in this moment, to say something that brings forward the word you’ve placed into my heart,” Pearson dramatically began. ” I accept my unworthiness for such a task as bold as this, and I seek your guidance as you use me and speak through me to the ancestor preachers who made sermons from hymns, moans and groans, and spirituals from the bondage of slavery.”
” If we just get this persecution over with, then we won’t have to worry about folks talking about love and justice,” he stated. ” We won’t have to worry about folks talking about freedom of speech or the right to protest. For what is right in our hearts is right. They won’t have to worry about folks talking about advocating for people to get access to health care who are transgender children.”
“Won’t have to worry about the need to end lynching as capital punishment. Won’t have to worry about these folks out here who talked about infant gun violence, stopping the proliferation of weapons of war on our streets and community, expanding access to abortion and contraception, ending bad laws like the third grader retention law that penalizes students, that helps them,” he continued to rant.
“‘In my name, they will drive out demons. They will speak in new tongues. They will pick up snakes with their hands, and when they drink deadly poison, it will not hurt them at all. They will place their hands on sick people, and they will get well,'” he quoted from scripture. Pearson used this passage to promote more woke political policies.
“What is the prophecy for we who are persecuted, we who are black, we who are poor, we who are queer, we who are disenfranchised, we who are women, we who are knocked down but not knocked out, we who are pushed up against the wall and told to shut up and dribble?” he intoned.” We who they try to bend and break? What is the resurrection mean to us?”
” I believe that our foremothers are sending us through the annals of time from the life of the black Jewish boy named Jesus to tell us indeed, what is the prophecy in which we believe that even as persecuted people who are being disenfranchised by those in positions of power in the legislature. What is the prophecy?” he asked. “…there’s resurrection love, even in times where the society lacks it.”
Watch His Over The Top Rant Here:
“You’ll be able to pick up the snakes of hatred, the snakes of backbiting, the snakes of bribery, the snakes of racism, the snakes of homophobia, snakes of transphobia, The snakes of apathy against gun violence, the snakes of apathy against environmental justice, the snakes of injustice everywhere, threatening our justice everywhere. And you’ll be more than a conqueror,” Pearson finally concluded. The prophecy is for you, my persecuted people.”
