Following famous actor Russell Brand’s monumental conversion to Christianity earlier this year, he has been extremely vocal about his post-baptism faith, which has changed his life. Brand recently uploaded a video to Instagram explaining his recent findings in 1 Corinthians 6:19, which states that it is key for one to treat one’s body as if it is a “temple.”
“‘Did you not know that your body is a temple?’” Brand asked. The actor further expounded on the context of Paul’s instructions to those in Corinth and how their lifestyles, marred with sexual immorality, contradicted the teachings of Jesus Christ.
“What I like about that is the interrogative — ‘did you not know?’” he asked. “When I saw it rendered, it was like this — ‘did you not know that your body is a temple?’ It was, like, a really gentle thing. It comes in Paul talking to the Corinthians. ‘Did you not know that body is a temple? What are you doing? Your body is a temple!’ Because they’re living in a really sexual, licentious culture. It’s amazing to me, especially when you equate it with…an Old Testament prescription.”
He continued, discussing what it truly means in the new covenant under Christ to treat the body as a temple or dwelling place for the Holy Spirit. “In the new covenant, when the body becomes the temple…perhaps we have to be equally specific. If we are to make ourselves a dwelling place, a residence for God, then it’s the equivalent of six cubits this way, 20 cubits this way — we have to have the measurements correct. Otherwise, you may not receive the message.”
The Christian Tribune has consistently reported on Brand’s high-profile statements on his faith, where his testimony serves as a meaningful example for others. Brand recently appeared on Christian influencer George Janko’s podcast, sharing some profound realizations about himself when coming to faith in Jesus Christ.
Addressing the topic of narcissism, Brand said, “And to start with that compliment about Paul is really apposite and heartening, because I suppose all personal narcissism might, in its own way, be certainly an attempt to be your own god, and even if you don’t want to go as extreme as narcissism, self-centeredness or individualism, not saying that we’re not all individual and that there isn’t a great beauty in our diversity and our distinctions and our differences.”
Brand then illustrated the amazing nature of salvation through Christ, where all can be redeemed and forgiven by placing their faith in Him. “But as a Christian, I’m learning that when it comes to the most important matters, we are all redeemed. We are all forgiven, that there is no significant individual merit about among us, that we are all forgiven collectively. I love this, and I loved it when I heard that if it had just been you, if it had just been you, Christ would have come and sacrificed himself for you individually,” he said.
